MOMO prototipo question

ive debated getting one of these and was about to when I saw this thread

Momo Steering Wheel Install, Illustrated

which mentions in a post that there was difficulty getting it to center

the thread is old

what is the current opinion? Anyone recently purchase a new one and put it on an SC without centering issues?

Thanks

Other members will likely comment here - I haven't heard of this issue; prob the most popular steering wheel that we sell; haven't heard any complaints other than people wanting a 380mm version in addition to the offered 350mm.

I bought one for my 83 SC a couple of years ago. I had no issues at all. My only complaint is I wish the grip was a little thicker. Nice wheel though.

Its not thick enough and is hard as a rock, but it matches my interior. If I was still auto-xing, I would go back to my other wheel.

Friend purchased a knockoff from Asia a couple years ago and discovered it flexed. He replaced it with the real thing (or a better knockoff?). Otherwise it looked legit.

Assuming you have proper alignment and if you make sure the front wheels are straight when you remove the old wheel and hub then install the Momo hub and wheel you won't have a centering issue. The splines on the steering column are very close together so you might think the wheels are straight but they are off by 1 spline and it won't be centered.

Ok thanks. That’s the same as the original steering wheel setup then

Yea that’s what’s stopped me all these years and I prefer skinny wheels like the original but I’m still tempted to try it or the Monte Carlo

No worries yeah it is. It might take a few tries before you get it centered. If you can drive the car far enough so you know the wheels are self centered by driving it straight ahead that usually works pretty well.

I have the Monte Carlo and like it very much. The wheel is thicker where your hands go. A cross-section of this part of the wheel is oblong, not round. Quite comfortable. Most wheels will obscure, at least somewhat, the instruments. Like many, I turn the instruments so that the needles stay in view.

My steering wheel was off center when I installed the Momo hub. I had it straightened during my next alignment.
Since then I've wondered if I could have removed the hub and rotated it in ~60 degree increments on the steering column until a better vertical position was found. (Similar to how you can make fine adjustments to spring plate angles by reindexing the torsion bars)
