Hello everyone! Just bought my first Porsche! '78 911 SC Project
Welcoming myself to the forum. I just bought a '78 911 SC Targa with 198k. It is a total project. I will be documenting all of my work. I have been reading on here for months and decided an SC is for me. I wouldn't have it any other way than to have this beater to get me started.
![]() She doesn't look like much, but passes CA smog and runs very well. It isn't dented up, but surely has seen better days. Mostly everything works as it should. I am going to bring her back to life. I already ordered a few books and am getting myself affiliated with everything. I have a long background of wrenching on BMW's so this car is very different. Needless to say I am very excited! |

I'v been going crazy reading and educating myself on everything I need to know. I am in the process of breaking it down for a complete cosmetic refresh for starters. It's in pretty bad shape, but mostly everything works and is in tact.
![]() ![]() I started removing the back panels ![]() Also removed the beat up front bumper, surely wasn't smiling anymore ![]() I plan on removing the windows and panels also. I am going to do the paint the right way. I also have located a whole interior that's in very nice shape. Also rebuilding the pedal assembly, adjusting the clutch, and doing the shifter bushings. Pics to follow! |

Well summer happened and I didn't get to do anything to the car other than think about it daily.
I recently hit the ground running and hard. First stop was to pull the motor. I got some 6 ton harbor freight special jack stands and a buddy. Took a few hours, but was pretty painless. We were meticulous with a check list and slowly got it all undone and out. Pretty fun process. I read a lot of stuff out there about what people are using to remove their engines. I didn't see anyone using this Harbor Freight transmission jack and it worked like a charm. ![]() ![]() I used a harbor freight transmission jack I had laying around the shop. I used a floor jack up front on the transmission, but decided I didn't need it. The HF trans jack is awesome! ![]() I had to do it... ![]() Since my engine stand has only 3 legs, I had to use ratchet straps and a come along tied to the ceiling to get it on the stand. Worked without an issue. ![]() It's new home for now.

Has been a while since I updated this, but I am going to bring everyone up to speed. A ton of work has been done on this project. I had a couple of surgeries slowing me down this past year, but I still managed to get pretty far.

I built a blast booth in my garage. It was horrible and I will never do anything so crazy again so long as I live!
![]() ![]() ![]() I found the original paint covered by a same color respray, then covered by a coat of petrol blue. So many layers of paint! ![]() ![]() ![]() Got to do some blasting outside for once

Looking forward to seieng how how it ends up! I just got my SC on the road after working on it for almost 3 years. I have an extensive pivot table with part numbers and suppliers if you are intersted. It might be helpful.

How did I miss this? It looks like you are doing a pretty good job so far. Have you found any rust? I am guessing you are going for stock resto. Nice pictures.

Thanks! I'd happily take any special stuff you have like that. I am almost done the build. I haven't updated in ages. I have been working though!

Thank you! No rust or dents. Car was beaten to death by the sun, but that's about it. I am almost done. I just haven't updated in a while. It's been a long labor of love. Only thing I didn't do it spray the car.

I took the car down to bare metal and resprayed it with Glasurit Line 22 in Peru Red, which was the original color. I got all new seals to install and then a new interior to follow. So excited to finally see an end in the somewhat reasonable future.

Was wincing when I saw red, but original is a good move and Peru Red is way better than Guards. I own a Carmine Red car so I can post this. ; )

Thanks guys! I will be updating it more soon. I just uploaded all the photos from my old cell phone. I stopped at Parts Heaven today and grabbed the remaining pieces I needed (I think).
