Rennshift install problem

I’m installing the rennshift now and I have a problem. I removed the original shifter and as you can see the bushing bracket that the screws need to back into are not aligned in the right place and I can get the rod to move now

What am I doing wrong? Instructions are so ambiguous

I think I answered my own question.....because of the gear I left it in when I unbolted, I’m gonna have to loose the coupler in the rear so the rod slides around.

If I’m wrong please provide any insight.

Tried it. I was wrong

I’m not able to move where ever. It’s horizontal movement is tight like still in gear. I can pull upward but that doesn’t bring the bolt holes anywhere near where I think they need to be

Also with the space as you call it, the 6mm bolts that came with the rennshift won’t be long enough to reach the rod bracket

Lift the whole rod assembly up and maneuver it to wherever you want it.

I usually run a length of phone wire down through the two small holes, around the shift rod, then up through the shifter base to keep it raised and aligned until I get all three bolts lined up.

You can pull out the cheater wire before you do the two smaller bolts.

(There are many different ways to solve this geometry problem. Others may have an easier/simpler method.)

And btw spacer doesn’t stay in.

I’ve been trying 3 hours to get the two small bolts to screw into the rod bracket holes. Tried string, wire, zip ties. Can get them lines up Just can’t the bracket close enough up to base of shifter to get the bolts to catch threads. If bolts were just a few mm longer this would be a lot easier. I’m ready to give up

Any suggestions please advise

No you didn’t. I appreciate your help. I had a different issue I wasn’t noticing with my rod bracket being jammed in place and not moving and I didn’t understand

It’s not always easy to visualize what you guys mean without talking

I still can’t get this.

Had the two small screws finally into bracket but they would only go in at an angle and everything got jammed and shifter wouldn’t even move when I tried

You guys on here make everything sound so easy. From everything I read on here I thought this was the 15 minute job everyone says it so I took half a day off thinking I would stick this on and go drive

Well bull****. This is the hardest thing I’ve done to this car and I’ve had it 12 years

I got it installed. This is indeed a 15 minute job. Unfortunately I spent 6 hours trying to install it because of a simple misunderstanding. Ill explain so someone taking the shifter off for the first time doesnt repeat this

when I took my original shifter off, I unbolted it and pulled it off. I never saw exactly where the rod bracket was originally. I removed the shifter, put it aside and looked in my tunnel where I saw the rod and rod bracket sitting on the floor of the tunnel

When I went to install the Rennshift, I was trying to install it with the bracket under the tunnel...while I did manage to get the 6mm screws in after 6 hours of trying, it did not allow the bracket to sit flush

by accident, I sorta dropped the bracket on top of the tunnel while moving things around and noticed that it sat there very naturally so I dropped the Rennshift on top of it and it appeared to be right...and James verified it was. THANKS!! Im a very determined idiot I guess

For me the problem came from the Bentley book not showing the bracket installed or any other photo I could find....probably because once its sandwiched into the right spot between the shifter base and the tunnel, you cant see it to photograph it

anyway, below is a photo of how it should look when you go to install the Rennshift or your original shifter

disregard the string coming out of the hole...i was using that before I realized the right way to do this as a way to pull the bracket up towards the shifter---you do not need to use any string or anything else

This is great, I want to install my rennshift now that I have a nice new trans. I wanted to drive it a bit in factory form, but want to get the rennshift put in.

Enjoy. It made me love my car a lot more than I already did
