359 speedster?

Has anyone ever seen a 359 speedster? For the price of one speedster replica, you get three cars, got a 2.7 to boot.

, This will go well with that 917 replica a couple of posts back

Can anyone PS some decent bigger wheels on it? It's no prize but I think with bigger wheels it might look better.

Thumbs up

Don't listen to these negative types they can be a really nice car if you take the time to sort them out mechanically...

CMC 359 Speedster inspiration: In 1987, Porsche delivered a Porsche 959 to German race driver Jürgen Lässig; who, owned the car up until he had an accident on the Autobahn in 1988. The 959 had flipped over and was severely damaged in the collision with an Audi 80 on the A 81 at Singen on the top, right front and on the side. From there it was bought by a company called Auto Becker. The damaged car went to Auto Becker in Dusseldorf where it was converted to convertible. The engine technology and the complete electronics remained untouched; Stiffeners were welded in. Becker chopped the roof off and fit a 911 Speedster windshield. They also fit a folding soft-top. Afterwards, the 959 Speedster was shown at the IAA show in Frankfurt. A collector from the US bought the car for allegedly 3 million D-Mark. The car can also be converted at any time to a normal Cabriolet, or hard-top configuration. Becker preserved the original roof to be installed if so desired as a removable hard-top - by way of a few handles and the exchange of windscreen and hood. This original style roof was supplied in a very large custom made padded box. The 959 Speedster was tested by Sports Car International in February 1992. From the waistline down the car looks like the original 959 which it is. From the waistline up the 959 in Speedster mode looks like a 911 Speedst

2.7 Speedster 959 replicars

As a owner, I did lots of reading over the years and research on the web and it seems that CMC only built two (maybe 3) six cylinder cars. I understand that two of them had 2.7 litre engines. Therefore, the car at the top of this thread is very rare. Mine also had a 2.7 as my paperwork shows it had a 1974 Porsche 911 drivetrain when it was built. It was titled as a 74 Porsche and had a five speed transmission. It was registered in Georgia then latter imported to NY where Peter's Porsche Shop installed a Porsche 3.6 litre and G50 tranny. These cars were based on the Porsche 911 wheelbase (not the 356 as most people think). The six cylinder cars used completely different frame and not the VW pan. My car utilizes a custom tube frame with all Porsche parts for suspension and running gear. They were top quality fibreglass cars and used entirely different molds than the CMC 356 Speedster other then the inside tub and windshield assembly they are completely different cars. Made to have lots of room at the rear like the original 959 in order to accommodate large Porsche six cylinder engines with room for twin turbo's. They were made at the end of the CMC companies life using the best they had to offer blending their 356 Speedster technology with the front and rear styling taken from the Gruppe B, 959. Interestingly over in Germany, at the same time as the CMC version was being developed so too was the Becker 959 Speedster. As you know the Becker 959 was a genuine 959 that was rolled end-over-end on the Autbon after delivery while being driven by a Porsche race driver. Becker a German tuning and modification firm purchased the rolled 959 and converted the car to a Speedster using windshield parts from the 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster. Interestingly, Both the CMC 959 Speedster and Becker 959 Speedsters were introduced at auto shows during the same period.

There is a local guy who has one and has convinced himself that he actually owns a Porsche. He even speaks about it like it was special production car.

Let's not get carried away

No, it's just a fun replicar powered by a Porsche drivetrain built for club events.
Still lots of fun in its Martini black widow colours !

I'm OK with replicas as long as they resemble a real car. For instance Porsche never made a long hood convertible.

I would classify something like this as a "Special".

Nothing wrong with a "Special" that but lets not kid ourselves.
These cars can be extremely difficult to sell for the right money when the time comes.

Special

Yes, it's a Special that's for sure. I don't have a lot into it since it came to me for trades I made for Porsche engines I rebuilt for local collectors. Owned 12 Vintage Porsche cars over the years and rebuilt several in my shop. From complete restorations to scratch built replicas up here in Thunder Bay, ON. Canada. It is a really fun car to own.

would you have bought it with money?

I can believe it is fun to drive.
Most will also agree it is not fun to look at.
(a face only a mother could love.)

As long as you like it, it's all good.

The truth is that it gets more waves then my old 1973 Porsche Carrera RS replica!
It is the people's choice at our local cruise nights as difficult as that is to understand so it's not just mothers who like the car as you say...
Hard to understand but it draws a crowd. After owning and rebuilding 12 Porsches over the years I don't get it either!
