Does leather dying work?
I’m looking at a CPO car with very light grey, almost white seats and some other light trim. I know I can get the seats re-done, but the trim looks like it would be trickier.
I’ve read about dying leather, but I’m wondering if it really works. Does anyone have some experience with dying leather car upholstery? Last edited by Quickstep192; 05-10-2019 at 08:52 AM.. |

Yes, but I would recommend using an air brush like the nail salons use.
The good ones are less than $100. Bill K

Is this an almost new car? Must be if it's CPO.
Just shop for the car you want. You aren't dyeing leather trim on an almost new car, thats just nuts. |

Have a look at Leatherique. I’ve done a few cars with it and it renders pro results

I'm not planning to do it myself, I'd have it professionally done, I was just curious to know if it will hold up.
As for shopping for the car I want, it's been challenging... I'm after a certain exterior color with a manual trans. The manual trans is hard enough and this is the closest thing I've found, so I'm weighing my options... |

I used Leatherique dye on my steering wheel when a certain re-coverer dyed it in the wrong color. The steering wheel probably get the harshest treatment of all the interior pieces, but in 20,000 miles, no one has ever said 'has your wheel been dyed' ?
Short answer - it will hold up. YMMV depending on the old vs. new color. Better success going from lighter to darker, rather than the other way around. Bill K

Color Plus is another very good re-die option. I, as well as several others I know, have used it with very good success.

ever see a red cow? They are all dyed, proper prep = if it starts to bleed you can do it again.

This is one of those jobs maybe best off to do it yourself. If you hire someone to do it check out their references, I've seen some that were poorly done. Leatherique is good and I heard Color Plus is good also. Prep is the key.
