Running a bit hot
 

Yesterday, here in the Seattle area we had warm temperatures (85F). I took the 9116 (76) for a drive around town. Somewhat stop and go traffic. Temp rose to around 210. Typically doesn't get that hot, but then again neither does the weather. Two things have just taken place with the engine: valve adjust with 10 quarts of oil, and I added another 1/2 quart. Could these two things: valve adjust and adding another 1/2 quart of oil cause the engine to run hot?

Did it cool down after driving for extended period? Did you change oil weight?

Does it have a front oil cooler? Typically, a 10 deg increase in ambient temp will increase oil temp by 20 deg (F). Without a front cooler, that's likely all she's got for cooling. The thermostat is probably wide open, using just the engine mounted cooler.
With that said, 210 isn't bad. It's hot enough to boil the water and nasty stuff out of the oil. It helps get rid of the mocha shake under the oil cap.

Idling in traffic? Yep it'll warm up in no time without forced air cooling. 210F is fine. 250F (120C) is where you start to worry about oil breakdown.

The oil weight is 20/50; no change with the weight from previous. It didn't get hotter than 210-15. At this point it appears there's nothing to worry about. Thanks for the feed back.

The 76 911S came with the five bladed engine fan. Most have been upgraded to the eleven bladed one. Which one do you have?
