converting my MFI to 2.7 RS specs

Lots of activity on the subject of the 2.7 RS lately. has me considering it instead of a 3.2. I have a 2.0 E with the magnesium stacks and an injection pump from a 73 S. I assume that the pump has been converted to an E space cam but I have no information on it. What would it take (money, time and effort) to convert my MFI to the RS spec? Are the parts still available?

Tim Walsh 03-20-2003 08:00 AM

hmm. what type of case do you have rich? I think it will be either a 2R or a 3R. If it's a 2R I don't think it's strong enough to take the power of the 2.7RS if it's a 3R its a possibility but it's not the best.

If your case is right then it just takes a rebuild including rebuilding your engine, new P&C's, rebuilding your MFI pump ($1K) boring out your throttle bodies and stacks.

It cost me $2700 to convert a 2.0 E MFI set-up to 2.7 RS spec. This counted rebuilding the throttle bodies. My guess is that a well built 2.7 RS spec motor will cost you SEVERAL thousand dollars more than installing a strong running 3.2

Been there, done that. In hindsight, I would not hesitate to go with a good 3.2

Tim Walsh 03-20-2003 08:05 AM

I would actually get much more enjoyment out of a 2.5 or 2.7 motor than a good 3.2. I much prefer the MFI over the DME just because to me porsche is MFI. I much prefer the early screamers compared to the later cars. There aren't any electronics running everywhere it's just the Tb's, the pump and a CDI box.

Yes the 3.2 would be more power but for me I'd rather have an early engine even if it means more time/$$

Thanks Tim. I would buy another longblock with the proper modifications. I'm interested specifically in the MFI changes. I think I saw a posting that someone bought an RS space cam for $450 recently. Is this a drop in addition or does it require rebuilding the pump? I assume that Pacific can bore out the intakes. What modifications need to be done to the throttle bodies? Am I better off buying a set of S throttle bodies to start with? These are the sorts of details I'm looking for.

Tim Walsh 03-20-2003 08:23 AM

I'm actually thinking of doing the same thing, Takeing an old 7R 2.7 longblock, puting in RS pistons and doing up my MFI to work on it. It would be a great motor. But all that's a couple years down the road for me (college first)
I think that you're better off with the magnesium stacks like you have. My Plastic stacks won't work as well. I think the space cam is a drop in replacement but I"d be REALLLLLLY leary of opening up the MFI pump. I pulled off the caps to check for varnishing on my pump and it's really complicated in there.

Yes pacific FI can bore out your stacks and throttle bodies.

gus ....does the pump work and eurometrix is recommended for enlarging/ repairing /rebushing the throttle bores. 800 to 1 k. someone had a post within the last month of a weber rebuilder that was cheaper.

the interview with the gus man noted that he bought all the injection pump parts from bosch when they quit servicing them. try dis ( diesel injection service ) for rebuild prices also if you get the space cam. they do bosch stuff.

i would get a wad and go to hershey and see what you can find as far as used rebuildable parts instead of modifing your own ( maybe cheaper ). when unmolested STOCK 'e's are just as desireable as 's's, you will be glad you did.

you guys desire such 'peaky' beasts. like the kawasaki z1 900 of lore. she will spank you when you hit the power band in a corner. my opinion , but the e motors are the best balance of power and steetability.

tim have you got that thing sparkin yet. log off and get it goin. WE ARE DYIN' TO KNOW.

another tom from over the hill.

Tim Walsh 03-20-2003 09:47 AM

tom I'd love to log off and try but it's still raining/pouring here and my cars out in the open.

well and work.. errr.. getting paid, it's not really work here :D

I am putting together a 2.7 E spec MFI motor. 2.7rs pistons E cams, 36mm ports enlarged throttles& stacks. This may work well with a stock 2.4 E pump(adjusted, these engines ran a little too rich to begin with) or I may have to make my own custom spacecam. This should make a nice streetable engine.

Basically you can have the 73 S pump changed easily by Hanz at H&R in New York. Get set of 73 S stacks and throttle bodies at Hershey from Matt Blast, the owner of Eurometrix. The S and RS were the same size. Get the motor built, bolt it all up and go. Easy, but expensive. Be creative, spend the money and build an MFI 3.0.

After I experienced the difference between Tom's 2.4 E and my 2.2 E, I jumped right into exploring options for more power. One of mine was also a 2.7 and keeping the 2.2 in case I ever sell the car.

I called Otto (Venice Beach, CA)and talked with him about what he would do and what it would cost to build a RS spec motor: $11- 13K. A little too rich for me. That said, Paul has found a neat 2.5 locally we hope to go check out next week. Rich, want to tag along?

RichMason 03-21-2003 04:59 AM

Hal,

Sound like fun. Please let me know when you guys are going. I have exchanged a few emails with a guy about a 2.7 on the board. Looks like you can get a running one for 1500 - 2000. Of course, the 2.7 problems are infamous but I think it would be fun to do a rebuild myself once it needed it. I am very tempted by the idea of just transferring my E/S MFI straight over and seeing how it runs. Of course the 3.2 is still my first choice. I really want a cleaner running car with modern FI but still with the classic look of our early 911s.

Paul Thomas 03-21-2003 01:40 PM

Rich,
Changing CIS to MFI would mean a top-end rebuild at least. the heads need to be drilled and tapped for the injectors, and you need to add the sprocket to the left side cam. I am not sure about the internal differences, like cams, but i am sure there are some.

Paul
