3.2 in a 1970

I have decided to pull the engine from a M491 cab that was a theft recovery car. There is just too much missing from the car to ever try to put it back together.

I want to pull the engine from the car along with everything that I will need to install it (eventually) in my 1970. Besides the basics like the ECM along with the wiring what else do I need to pull?

Fuel lines? Fuel pump (if there is one), gas tank? Any sensors?

Engine - complete
Engine wiring harness
Rear electrical console
coil
DME (under seat)
DME harness (carefully removed. do not cut wires)
tach
oil pressure gauge (to put gauge pod in your 70 gauge)
I would also grab the fuel pump and fuel tank.

Your 70 may not have a fuel return line. IN this case you need new fuel lines. Would be wise to replumb the entire system with fresh lines.

So yes, you need a lot of parts.

I would also grab the 930 brake system off the M491 for your car. More brake is good.

If its a 915 car I would also grab the adjustable spring plates and rear torsion bars. Will help balance the car suspension with the heavier engine in the rear.

There are other parts as well that bolt on. not sure what is left on your theft recovery.

I didn't think the torsion bars would fit a 1970, something about the floor pans were a touch different in the G50 or turbo cars.

I would also grab the front suspension, the 3" spacing on the 70 isn't as universal as the 3.5 on the M491, plus then the turbo calipers/brakes all the way around.

That's why I said... "if its a 915 car..." A G50 torsion bar does not fit.

You will also want to salvage the oil cooler and lines. My 3.2 conversion had good temps with a simple SC loop, but Florida temperatures will need more of a cooler with a fan.
I would also consider SSI's. Stock 3.2 exhaust with cat is large and heavy.
My car is strictly street and stock torsion and sway bars worked well. Does your car have sway bars?

There is no exhaust on th car and no oil lines or cooler.

Not sure if the 70 has them but the 88 does.

Rear brakes are there but the fronts are missing.

You will need to remove drivers seat to mount DME. Hole will be drilled under drivers side rear seat to run wiring harness. Fuel tank with supply and return lines. Fabricate mount for fuel pump by gas tank, and rear mount for fuel filter. Need 3.2 flywheel with steel pin for DME sensor. If using your '70 915 you will be using original speedometer, but if you have the tachometer from the '86 you will want to use it in the '70. My 1973 tachometer worked with DME wire, but some suggest it may not work. Rewire electrical console pin out. Can give you links to other threads on this later. 3.2 uses thick flange exhaust, but I made a few adapters to use the thin flange SSI's from my '73. I installed an O2 bung on my SSI's, but you could run it without one. Chip has a default mode.
As far as suspension, '70 used different through body sway bar setup than the later 3.2's. You could look in the used parts forum for parts to install in your 1970 if you want to add them. You will also need to install an oil cooler in the front passenger fender well. I also added a connection to the 3.2 fan shroud for the charcoal cannister line.

One more thing. You will need to use the engine oil cooler and case oil line from the 70 engine. The 70 oil tank has smaller fittings and threaded engine oil cooler fitting. The later tank has larger fittings with a clamp "S" hose on the suction side. The later oil tank will not physically fit in the early tub. Body cutout is different.

Great advise everyone. I am out of town on business next week but right after that I will begin pulling the engine. Look for an update once the engine is out.

Don't forget the altitude sensor under the driver's seat next to the DME & DME relay. It's the only other sensor that I can think of that hasn't been mentioned.

what about the widebody flares? Makes for a cool 70 hotrod. I'd be keeping those as well

keep the donor until you finish building the 70
that way you have everything you need and it is easier to remove a part and install it immediately rather than having a pile of old parts then try to figure out what to do.

I looked up a picture of the altitude sensor. I will have to check to see if it is still in the car.

Thanks
