Paint to sample
My 1979 930 was ordered paint to sample. On the certificate if authenticity it reads for the exterior color "paint to sample/9999"
What is the 9999. There is no color code for 9999. Is this the option number? Thanks in advance Sloane |

9999 is a "dead code". It means, "Don't try to look up a standard color formula, this is a custom color match."

Hmm
99 is described as Custom Metallic paint and 99 is also used for leather upholstery to sample. Do you have both? That would make sense for you 9999

paint code 99XX
99 = Paint to sample (new color) 98 = Paint to sample (previously used Porsche color) Not sure what the 3rd and 4th digit "99" of your paint code represents. |

Man, you guys are tough to convince! Call your auto paint store and tell them to pull the Porsche formula for 9999. He'll tell you it's a dead code reserved for custom matched metallic paint.
9898 is a non-metallic paint-to-match code. 9999 is a metallic paint-to-match code. I'm not making this up!

Thanks. for all of the info. However my car is not a metallic paint. Could it be a mistake on the certificate?

There were no 4-digit paint codes used in 1979!
It may have been coded 9999 as an option on the sticker and COA, but the proper paint code for paint to sample was '099' in 1979!!!

The car is "blood orange". The paint code to this is in the door jam on a silver plate.
There must be a mistake on the certificate. Sloane |

Check out page 3.
http://www.911turbo.com/turboclub/docs/2002gt2.pdf They are using new Porsche paint code (in this case a dead code) to describe that they have done a custom color match. The 9999 is not intended to refer to any factory color, past or present, dead or alive.

If the car is painted at the factory "special order" in a colour previously offered, It well still have the paint code in the front trunk.

9999 paint sample is a custom color,in my case I found the color by having the dealer check with the factory in my case the color was ferrari red hence the term paint to sample, the factory would paint the car to anything you wanted them to, lipstick, nail polish , other car mfgs colors.....etc no sure if the factory still does my car was 84 turbo look

A friend of mine had his new (then) 930 painted '64 Poppy Red (Mustang color) I'm sure the paint code was 9898. Sounds like you might have a repaint of the original.

Its not a repaint. I bought the car with 2,600 actual miles. It also has the correct color code in the door jam.

Here is a pic. The car used to belong to probably the largest Porsche road and race car collector in the U.S. at one time. His name was Bill Jackson. He had this car painted to match his 904.

Would this mean there is a mistake on the certificate?

Here is the response I recieved from Porsche COA devision:
Sloane, The color code "9999" simply means that it was not a standard or special paint, but one that was matched according to the original owner's request. There is no exterior color in 1979 for "blood orange". The paint colors for 1979 would be 4 digits, like A2A2 for all black, or G8G8 for Guards Red. |
