door pockets
Well I bought a set of used door pockets because I was missing one AND they are different than the one on my car. I have an 1983 SC, not sure what the other pockets came from. Mine have a lip on them that allows the pocket to screw into the door. The others seem to screw up into something that screws to the door. Any input on this, and when did the change occur?

The SC does have the one little block in one corner that requires screwing first the block in, then the pocket to this block. Otherwise, the pocket screws right in. The holes are pretty well hidden by material though.

If you decide to buy newly produced door pockets, Original Fit Interiors of Oregon does them with German materials for $245.00 a pair. They advertise in Panorama and Excellence. I am having a set made for my car and should have them in about a weeks time. I have sent them the covering from my original door pockets for a color match. I understand that they use a fiberglass pocket which is covered with black felt like the originals before they are covered with carpet and vinyl trim.

Harlan:
I've had a set of door pockets pending with OFI for about two months. They're notorious for being slow. Unless you're had your order pending for some time now, I wouldn't count on getting them in a week. Scott

Mounting tabs/blocks
Does anyone know where I can get replacements for the plastic (bakelite?) mounting blocks that go in the front back points of these pockets? These are the blocks referred to above; a screw goes through into the door and another comes in through the pocket.

The local Porsche dealer can get almost any part that is still available as a last resort.

Has anyone out there dealt with Original Fit Interiors for any interior carpet or door pocket needs?

My experience with OFI is the same as everyone elses.
I ordered a 993 RS carpet set from them. The guy took my credit card information and said it would be shipped next week. Several weeks went by and I called to see what was up. He said he was delayed due to a move and it would be done next week. Several weeks went by and I called to see what was up. He said he was delayed due to a move and it would be done next week. Several weeks went by and I called to see what was up. He said he was delayed due to a move and it would be done next week. Finally, I called to say that if the carpet was not in my hands on the following Wednesday I would cancel the order and I had the carpets on that day. |

Harlan: Funny you should ask. Just yesterday I called to check on the status of my long-pending door pocket order. Before he was awaiting carpet. Now he's awaiting the actual pockets. And so it goes...

Door pockets are another one of those so-simple yet outrageously overpriced Porsche parts. The best prices I've seen are ~$150 per pair for bare plastic. You'd think that one of the fiberglass suppliers could stay late one evening and crank out enough stock to supply every 911 restoration for a year.
I contacted Bob "the door panel guy" at AppBiz about making them, but I never heard back. AppBiz seems to have a pretty darn good quality + service + pricing equation compared to most companies. |
