Fan corrosion opinion
Hi.
Anybody have an read on whether the corrosion on this fan and, particlarly the housing, looks 'normal' 'average' 'not an issue' 'not good'. It seems extreme to me for a CA car. Just wondering why it would look like that. I know it's only one picture, but any comments, red flags, greatly appreciated. Thanks. ![]() |

That looks like the coating peeling off, not metallic corrosion.

That looks like it lived by the beach. No coating from the factory, just chromated then waxoyl type sealant protectant.

That is what they call the process. Same for gearbox and all the magnesium parts. If you soda blast it and the housing and then apply a waxy cosmoline type oil you can get close to the original finish. It's been covered here quite a bit.

polish it and will look great. I used the cone shaped polisher that attaches to a drill and some cream

I had mine polished, but it quickly loses it’s shine. Perhaps a coating like Ceracote might slow things, but magnesium likes to return to it’s elemental state.

Just about every option here:
I'm no fan Simplest is to bead blast and apply "Tectyl" or other wax based coating on a regular basis. I use Wurth HKS, I think that is the correct name.

Thanks for the link. Yea, still no consenses. Some say use that Tectyl, others say is is a sticky mess.
I soaked mine in chromate. Chromate doesn't do a lot to magnesium. Then Gibbs. Looks OK. Would like to hear from more that have used either Tectyl or something else that looks original. Here is mine. ![]()

I personally think the appearance of the fan is normal corrosion over time. My fan looked like that in 1998 when i rebuilt my engine and i cleaned and polished the fan. Today, the fan looks like it has a light layer of corrosion and the car has been garage kept. I guess it is just a natural patina over time.

Clean it up and put some Gibbs on it while you are thinking about it.

The fan looks like somebody sprayed it with clear and it peeled and yellowed over time. I built a vapor honing cabinet which seems to close up the pores on magnesium and aluminum, almost like shot peening.

Not sure why Gibbs is the preferred product. Here's a comparison test that includes corrosion resistance with several products.
Comprehensive Corrosion Test: 46 Products Compared | Day At The Range Be aware the tests spanned several hours and/or days. IMHO, protecting bare metal and/or a Mg fan for months or years is a bigger job than any of these products can handle. I think a protective coating like Cerakote or equivalent is the way to go. Since it's a coating, surface blems can be addressed with filler materials as needed and thus won't be visible after applying the coating. Sherwood |

This is what my '85 fan looked like a few hours back, same yellow factory coating deteriorated.
