Stock muffler fabrication and installation

I have been thinking about getting rid of the bannana muffler on the rear of my P-Car (78 SC Targa) I don't like the idea of paying an arm and leg for a new SS muffler so I was thinking.

I have been looking at some of the mufflers at PEP Boys with the single in two out bi-directional flow for installation. I have access to a welder and I can have the tubing bent to fit the existing flange on the Cat Converter.

The muffler should fit (I havn't measured yet) where the bannana muffler is at present and with the new muffler I would have the option of single in, single out or dual out.

Any comments or opinions on doing this would be considered. I figure I could have the tubing bent at a local muffler shop, and I could do the rest. Price - well maybe (with me doing the labor/welding) parts only plus bending <$100.00.

Oh, by the way, I was also thinking of going with a "Thrush" glass pak" as a option. What do you think?

Sounds similar to the Flowmaster exhaust that a number of people have done (such as Jack on BB).

Why don't you just buy a Bursch.. there basically the same Dynamax Turbo and Thrush are both glass packs..You could even by a used one there are plenty of them out there.. Just a Thought.. Oh I almost forgot.. why do you wanna get rid of the Stock Banana muffler?

Well, I want to get a little more mellow sound from the engine. With the stock bi-flow muffler, there is less resistance for the gasses/noise so it should sound pretty mean - but I don't wan't it too loud.

That's what I had in mind. Where did you purchase it?

Bursch is a good muffler if you do not drive the car alot in the rain, do not live near the ocean and do not live where they salt the roads in the winter. They rust pretty quick. I have a Bursch. It has a throatier sound than stock, not too loud, and looks like new after one year. I do not do any of the above.

I wire brushed it down and painted it with 1500 deg. header paint.

Steve- I just had a custom exhaust fitted to my new Dodge Ram Hemi at Midas on Holcmb Brdg Rd. (Roswell). I used a "55" series Raven Muffler 1 in 2 out that should fit just like a Bursch on your car. I bet it would sound very good on a flat six! It is painted black from the factory, and they have a couple of sizes to choose. It is more mellow than a flowmaster, but unleashes a nasty growl when you open it up at high RPMs. The muffler is about the same price as a Flowmaster, and there is a young military guy at this shop who will bend/fabricate the pipework for you( really nice guy). Just another suggestion, since, like you, I don't want to pay alot for this muffler!!! For $100.00, if it lasts 4-5 years, I'm happy.

BTW: I did the exact same thing and went to Pep Boys first, then hit Midas.
