73 RS vs. 73 S

The recent RS thread got me thinking - anyone have any driving experience behind the wheel of a 73 RS and a 73 S? I was just wondering how the 2.4 S stacks up against an all out RS? Performance wise I'm sure it'll kick it's butt on the track, but I'm looking for more of a 'driving experience' comparison...

Brad

How about a '72S vs. '73 RS comparison? I've driven one of the lightweight RS's, drove it back in the 1970's. Maybe not a fair comparison tho, becasue this particular RS was a European hillclimb championship veteran, had more than a few "improvements"...short gears, suspension, etc. It is still the "quickest" (as opposed to fastest) 911 I've ever driven...this car was so well set up, driving it was like having the car read your thoughts instead of it responding to your inputs.

The S is considerably more "civilized" but just enough heavier and less powerful to seem like more of a GT touring car, at least to me. My wife always says some version of "The silver car (the S) is so much more comfotable than that silly race car, or whatever it is".

I love them both.
Let's see. Now that's a 73'RS, 73'S, and a wife.

Which both?

If anyone here should be interested I could e-mail you some scans of old GERMAN Auto Motor & Sport magazine tests with the 911S 2,4 & RS 2,7. They're actually fun to read (the world of cars was different back in 1972). Includes performance data test results.

I have driven both. I agree with Dick, the lightweight 73 RS seats do not offer the same comfort over extended periods as the sport or sofa seat, and the lighter weight and reduced sound deadening is noticable when driving. The other differences are mainly the increased torque of the RS engine: with the 2.7 you have significantly more grunt starting lower in the rev range (about 3800) where as in the 2.4S things don't start happening till 4500. From 5K upwards it's the same experience for both - ZOOM, with a slightly deeper exhaust note from the RS. Both are great cars...

Mikkel, i'd be interested in the scans too. My work limits the size of attachements to maybe a couple of megs, not sure, but my email is bfranklin@metlife.com. If that doesn't work I have a web account with FTP capability if you can FTP stuff.

Thanks!

Brad

There is a guy I know of in Sacto who also has three '73's.
1. '73 S coupe
2. '73 RS
3. '73 RSR
I'll bet he's hard to buy a Christmas present for!

Thanks Mikkel, these are great!

Wow I didn't know the RS was *that* much faster than the S, the magazines show the 0-100km (62 mph) of about 5.7 seconds vs. 7.4(??) for the S, and 0-160km (about 100 mph) 13.7 vs. 17.8. Now that's a HUGE difference, I would have thought the S would be quicker than those numbers. Wish I could read German
