What size of engine does a 1984 Carrera have? How much HP? What else can you tell me about this car? Thanks

Hi there,

1984 was the first year with a 3.2. Stock, it's got about 200 HP, some say 207. Euro version has a bit more than that. It is also the first year of re-naming it a "carrera". Welcome aboard.

there were many changes in 84 that made the carrera the porsche "of choice".....sc's suffer from a not as efficiant/reliable fuel injection system:D (watch out for the scwdp crowd.they'll pull you in :D )
and welcome

I love my '84 Carrera. But I'm not sure it loves me. It's awfully demanding.. maybe it's just using me? It recently demanded a complete engine and transmission rebuild. Of course it wanted hotter cams and sweeter exhaust... changes that give it probably around 230hp. Now it's insisting that I go through the suspension and make some cosmetic/ergonomic improvements. I am in love, but I think I need a 12-step program.

Cheers,

Hugh -

Sounds like an ex-girlfriend of mine. Buy me this get me that. At least the car gives bit of appreciation after you get everything bolted up!

The'84 also has the In fender Oil cooler (radiator-like) as opposed to a loop or trombone cooler which is a copper tube loop.

Steering wheel may have been changed along with the Antenna being deleted from the fender and integrated into the windshield. '84 is a bit of a transition year as a couple of items where continued from the SC.

The CIS fuel Injection changed to the Motronic Engine management system.

Not always, my 84 came with the trombone from the factory.

Hmmm, like I said, a transition year. Wonder if all US 84s came with the trombone cooler.

Didn't the later Euro SCs have a fender mounted oil cooler?

Nope. I have an '84 with the finned cooler...:D

Also, keep in mind that the '84 retains the SC interior as well... steering wheel and seats. I'm in a quandary over mine. I'd love a 930S steering wheel and superanatomico shift knob, but.. there's something cool about leaving it bonestock-looking.
