3.2 induction on a 3.0

I have been thinking about adapting a motronic intake and injection system to a 3.0 that is currently down to a short block. I have most of the parts that I can think of- ecu, engine harness, intake, fuel pump, and flywheel. Engine will have 79 heads and 964 cams. Will this work? Any suggestions? Are there any threads on this forum that discuss this topic? I could not find anything. Thanks in advance.

Yow will need to figure how to support the 2 flywheel sensors at the 2:00 position unless you have a late 83 case.
The 79 heads will not give you room for the insulators.

AFAIK, as long as the 2 sensors are sitting in the correct orientation, I suppose a custom mount on the crankcase or even the gearbox bell housing would work. Need to confirm room for the install space.

I plan on running a 3.2 intake on my 3.0 so I can turbo it. Might be worth asking this in the 930/turbo forum as I think that a few SC guys are running 3.2 intakes.

Is there a workaround for the insulator issue?
I can figure something to hold the sensors-but how important is it to get them exactly at a particular rotation point? If I remember correctly, the DME has to know where tdc is-so I assume that it would use the pulse from one of the sensors to do that

I've got my 3.2 apart for a rebuild and turbo conversion. If you can wait until next weekend, I should have it together or at least together enough to give you some specs on where the stock sensor mounts are. I would hazard a guess at the sensor position needs to be pretty accurate. My guess is the ecu knows what offset angle the sensor has compared to TDC, and uses that to know where TDC is compared to when the set screw passes the sensor. At least, that's how a stand alone does it. For my build, I'm ditching the stock computer, so I'm using Rothsport's crank pulley and trigger. It has the missing tooth for crank position. Only one sensor needed instead of the 3.2's speed and reference sensors. Plus, the AEM allows for user defined offset, which means the mounting can be whatever you want.

It will be easier to just use an aftermarket EFI setup. Megasquirt, microsquirt, VEMS, AEM. You would have to have it tuned any way you look at it since the factory ecu isn’t programmed for forced induction, or larger fuel injectors

I agree.

And if you plan to use 964 cams on your low compression 3.0 engine, the EFI will help you boost the low end torque that will otherwise suffer.

You will need to adapt the 42mm 3.2 intake manifold to you 39mm heads.

The 3.2 manifold will do a great job compared the CIS intake.

You will need to match the shape of the 3.2 intake to the port of the SC heads. When you do so you have to make sure you leave enough material on the head to ensure a solid gasket seal. Lay the stock 3.2 insulator block on the intake port and you’ll see what I mean. Turbokraft makes phenolic insulator blocks that can opened up on the port side to better match the port on the head.

The other issue is that you will need longer intake studs because you are placing an insulator block between the intake and the head. Work carefully because if you break one or three… asked me how I know.

There's quite a few people running an otherwise stock 3.2 with a turbo on it. Protomotive used to sell chips, but I don't know if they are still doing that kit. I wouldn't be surprised if Steve Wong has a chip for it.

I built a 3.2 SS with a carrera DME system based on a 1980 3.0 a while back, here's a pic of my mount and also the mod to the trans bell housing to clear the sensors.
If you want to see pics of the completed engine do a search in this forum on How to start 3.0 engine on the ground

Turbo Kraft will supply insulator blocks-these will have to be opened up to match the intake ports. The welded and tapped aluminum piece looks like a good way to hold the sensor bracket. So, the complicated part will be placing the tapped hole in the correct location-that should not be too hard if you have good measurements from known points on the case.

What about using a 3.2 distributor-what direction will it rotate in?

porschyard 08-25-2019 06:02 PM

the 3.2 distr. is a clockwise unit and the 3.0 distr. is a ccw unit. you have to change the brass drive gear to a 3.2 gear if you want to use the 3.2 dizzy otherwise it is spinning in the wrong direction.

Inaminit,

Have you thought about using your standard CIS intake manifold and just adding a modern ecu like shown in the photo on page 14 of the Rasant manual?

Link on this page: https://rasantproducts.com/aem-engine-management-system/

I wouldn't willingly hitch my horse to the Motronic as it is old, limited and awkward to tune to suit your particular engine. No one willing uses an air flow meter nowadays. Trying to replicate the odd 3.2 flywheel sensor arrangement is also expensive without any real benefit.

Like others have advised, buy a modern ecu and either use the standard CIS intake or fit ITB's.

Adapting a 3.2 intake will be expensive and suggest not worth the effort. Unless you are going to turbo it of course!
