Third brake light 1988 911 Coupe
My '88 911 Coupe has the third brake light mounted at the top of the rear window. It is not working, and based on testing, I am thinking one of the wires may be broken or loose, but once they go into the headliner I am not sure where they go. Anyone else had a similar problem or have any suggestions?

When the 3rd brake light wasn't working on my '88, the first thing I checked was the light itself for corrosion. That's what it was... bit of light sanding cured it. Have you checked the light yet? I'd do the easy stuff before thinking about wiring. If the light looks okay, then check for voltage to see if you're getting power when the brake is depressed.

Have you checked the fuse?

I all the terminals are clean and I tested the light itself on a separate power source. That works fine. Put new clean connectors on it. When I test the raw wires themselves it’s not working. I checked the ground and that is good. Just not getting power somewhere.

Ok figured it out. Appears to have been a couple of issues. There is a connector on the driver side of the engine bay that connects the part of the wiring harness from the lower brake lights that connects to the part of the harness that runs inside the car to the third brake light. It had come disconnected, so it wasn’t getting power. The ground connects to a post inside the weatherstripping of the rear window and that was a bad ground. It seemed to test fine, but for whatever reason it didn’t work properly. I need to run a new ground, but I ran a test wire and it all worked.
