911sc died and no-start now
My 1982 SC died on the highway last week, it would start but would not run for very long. With each subsequent start the length it would stay running continued to drop.
The fuel pump was whiney and suspecting that it finally gave up, I changed the fuel pump with a new Bosch unit. But the car still does not start. It seems like there is spark because it lights up and immediately shuts off. Can you please guide me in the right direction to resolving this problem. Thanks in advance. |

What kind of CDI box do you have?
Could be ignition related. |

If you have a can of carb spray, you can take off the air cleaner, lift up the pop-off valve (I assume it has one) and spray some in there. If it runs normally for awhile, it's definitely fuel related.

The ignition box is the original Bosch box. The coil is less than a year old, replaced by the previous owner.
I do not have a pop-off valve. Also, I read that using starter fluid is not recommended for fuel injected engines. Is this true? |

Have you tried a new fuel pump relay?

It's not starter fluid, and all we want to do is see if it starts. If you don't have a pop-off valve, take one of the hoses off of the air intake boot and spray some in there, toward the throttle body side. If it's a fuel problem, it'll start and run for a few seconds. If it's spark, it will just crank without firing.

When was the last time a new fuel filter was installed? Is it possible for you to pull one injector and have someone try to start it while you see if it sprays into a bottle or container.

I assume that you verified fuel in the tank and not just relied on the gauge? The fuel pump could have been whining from a restriction in the inlet side or a plugged fuel filter. Have you noticed a gradual lack of power? That's the usual sign of a plugged fuel filter. I assume that you don't have the CIS fuel pressure gauge kit, so we're gonna go old school and have you pull off the fuel line coming out of the fuel filter. Pull that off, slide a hose on it, then put the end of the hose in a bucket. Turn on the key and watch for fuel flow. |

Now that I think about it, I felt the car felt low on power from what I remembered it to be. I don't drive it often enough to tell if there was a gradual drop in power.
I pulled out injector #4 and no fuel came out of the injector when cranked. I bypassed pins 30 and 87A of the relay and still no spray. I disconnected the metal fuel line connected to the injector, did the relay bypass test and still no fuel. I can clearly hear the fuel pump run, I am just surprised how restricted the fuel filter is. I will replace the fuel filter, and injector o-rings and provide an update. Thanks for the help guys. |

Still here

Given you have the injector fuel line disconnected and FPR bypassed, remove the air filter cover, lift the arm under the FD just a tad and see if there's spray.

Lifting the arm does spray fuel out of the disconnected fuel injector line. I guess not enough pressure is built with the gunked up filter for the injectors to spray. Out of curiosity, I stuck a boroscope through the fuel filler cap. OMG the state of the insides of the tank. What can I do to clean the insides without pulling the tank out? Would a few tanks of gas and Seafoam work to clean it up. |
