Question Porsche 911 Tach removal?

What is the best way to remove a tach on a 1973 911?

What tools are best to use?

Thank You for your responses

Fingernails, if they're strong, a dinnerknife or two if not. If your tach is the same as mine ('83), and I believe it is, it just pulls out of the dash, held in place in the hole by a simple rubber retainer ring. Just get something behind the bezel of the instrument on each side and pull it toward you.

Like Stephan said, no tools required. You will probably need to remove the steering column cover. They are pressure fit, so by pulling on the tach you should be able to get it out, at least mine does. If it is more stubborn you can go through the trunk area and push it out. Some people use a screwdriver to pry from the front but you must be very carefull not to scratch anything.

I have used a butter knife, but my prefered method is to push a gauge out from the trunk and then use the hole to push the TAC out from the back. That way there is no danger of scratching/tearing anything.

Yes mine is held by a rubber retainer ring, will I need to replace my rubber retainer ring or can I preserve it?

I too prefer the push through the back technique. The rubber ring should be reusable.
