G50 transmission mount question
The 101 projects book and my searches here have left me still questioning whether I can replace the tranny mounts on my '87 by myself. I'm at about a 2.5 mechanic level using the book's scale of skill. Specifically, I'm wondering since I don't have a press, will I be able to get the new mounts into the bracket in an appropriate way with just hand power? Or am I better off going consideration #2, which could be buying a new bracket with mounts installed from WEVO? Any advice appreciated.
My car is strictly street, so I'm looking at WEVO blues. Any opinions there? |

I have an 87 and I am pretty sure that the trans mount is a one piece aluminum with the 2 mounts in place
You replace the whole thing not the individual mounts like older 915 cars.

This is indeed the case, and buying the crossmember with mounts from Porsche is an eye-watering experience. WEVO is a great alternative (that I took advantage of a number of years ago): you send them your crossmember, and they send you back a beautifully reconditioned part, with their cushions installed, and mount hardware. Much more reasonable and very nice product.

Pelican was selling PEL-RSRMTM as a G50 trans mount kit, now they're listed as engine mounts, so research this (call them?) to be sure as things may have changed when I did it 8 years ago, if you intend to pursue.
Each side is 2-pieces, and you have to cut out the original ones as they were pressed in. It was more of a pain in the a** than a technical challenge. Afterward, I feel like the trans may have been a tiny bit higher (helping the shifting) as it seemed easier to shift, but I felt like I got a little more trans noise transmitted. I jacked the car, then the trans, then supported trans with blocks. Removed the long bolts on end, then the 13mm nuts. Two studs did come out so I cleaned and replaced these. I cleaned the mount and cut out the old bushings. New bushing went on, large on bottom. Finger tight all first then, torque long bolts 58 ft-lbs & 13mm nuts to 18 ft-lb. My original large washers were rusted so I got new ones and RTV'd the underside to prevent water from getting in. HTH PS I got an opportunity to clean things up around there and to replace the torn shifter boot in the rear (in pic).
