Rear seat belts in a 1977? (US spec)

Hey folks,
Last time I got a safety inspection for my 1977 911s, the mechanic gave me some grief about lack of rear seat belts. It's got front belts and shoulder straps. But, none in the rear. (He did give me a pass; hope he's as nice this year).

Told him there were never any in this car. He says if there are rear seats, there should be seat belts.

Who's right? Anybody got any ideas?

My '76 did not have belts in the rear from the factory either; however, the bosses for fastening them should be there under the carpet for a lap belt.

For the U.S. market, no standard rear seat belts through at least the 1980 model year.

Right, my 1979 didn't have them either, although there were plastic plugs and threaded bosses where they could be bolted.

My ROW 79SC came with one rear set on the right passenger side and the blank plugs on the drivers.

Weird.
My ROW 79SC came with a complete set of belts, front and rear.
(All of them on shelves in my basement.)

Armed with this info of similar vintage vehicles the mechanic at the inspection station let that one go.
