Do you remember when Cheryl Ladd was a young woman? WEll, if you do remember, then the '73 RS is like that. And here comes the point of my illustration: If you don't remember Cheryl Ladd as a young woman, then I'm not going to be able to explain her well enough for you to understand.
The '73 RS is just a magical combination of power and handling. It was the favorite of several experienced race car drivers, in a side-by-side test with Porsches finest street cars of all time (including 993TT, 996, etc.).

Hmmm...Cheryl Ladd going to the nude beach on Charlie's Angels. amazing what you can remember from when you were 10 years old. The only way that would have been better is if she had driven there in a '73 RS.

i have never driven one, but i have seen them raced, sold and shown. they are a beautiful, powerful, light car. they carry a sort of mythical quality amongst porsche-files because they were the last, and arguably best, of the lightweight porsches of the old design ('65 - '73).
in '74, there were changes to the bodystyle that changed the personality of the 911. smog laws also began to creep into the 911 equation. if you are not crazy about early 911's, you may not see what the big whoop is all about. for me, i love driving my '73 911E. it is cranky at times, but fun as hell to drive. it is as close to an RS i may ever get (maybe..............). so i definitely am in the early 911 camp. don't get me wrong, i like my '89 too, but it is a different animal than my early 911. for me, the '73 carrera RS or RSR is the epitome of the early 911's. |

If memory serves me right the power to weight ratio is in its favor. The car was built to be light therefore quick, nimble and highly desired. Sort of like Cheryl Ladd.

What's so special about the other 7 wonders of the world?
It's ok to ask a question like this. It just shows that you have a lot of reading up on Porsche 911's to do. |

Interesting side note- there is a great article on 911's in an issue of EVO magazine from sometime last year- they compared the ten greatest 911 street cars of all time, to choose the greatest 911 ever. Article covers about 20 pages, incredible photos, great cars (911RS, 993RS, 964 Clubsport...) The 911RS beat them all because of its purity and amazing throttle response, but some of the also-rans sure sounded like fun...

sssssssssssssssssssssss.... DANG IT!! there goes another keyboard. John if you're going to post drool material like that at least warn us.
![]() I think it's the height of early porsche. It's quick powerful and nimble. It's up there on clones that I want to own, above a gt40 clone, above a cobra 427, above any racing vette. It's the ultimate car in my opinion.

Of course, today one can create a lighter, faster RS "clone" that exceeds what the real RS was....
Technology marches on. |

It's similar to the reason their removing traction/launch control off F1 cars. The 73RS is the purist, back to basics form of driving.

I have the EVO article in pdf form. Its in two parts, slightly under 3Mb per part. If somebody can host 'em, I'll be happy to provide the files.
BTW, anyone who is mystified by the legend that is the 73 Carrera should read this article. A team of great drivers were given every great porsche from the 73 thru 2001 - 2.7RS, 3.0RS, 959, 3.2CS, 964RS, 993 RS, 993 GT3, 996 GT3, 996 Turbo, & 996 GT2. The aim was to select 'The Best 911 Ever'. Its a great read, with stunning pics. The cars themselves are all perfect examples, of course! And the winner was..........

We're all human and fallible, and so rarely approach perfection in our lives.
The RS was close. As others have said well here, it has an elemental purity, near perfect balance, and wonderfully direct and immediate responsiveness. Given the monumental advances in technology, there just aren't any other instances that I can think of where a thirty year old car still has near contemporary performance. It's not at all suited to everyday use, but I get a tremendous kick out of driving mine. |
