Totaled?

After 15 years of getting my 84 Carrera just the way I wanted it, today on the way home from a car show, the lady in front of of me swerved right in front of me and I immediately swerved to just miss her and ended up flying in the air into the side of a barn. Fortunately am OK (our cars are built like tanks). Did not think it would be this thought to loose a car!

The car rolls on all four wheels but the drivers side door is jammed shut, the left fender is crumpled the windshield popped out, the hood is crumpled and the roof has sight buckling in front of the sunroof. The frame is probably bent as well. It think it will probably be totaled. Do you guys agree?

Mike

Agree it will be totaled.
Engine still worth half the price of the car...plus all the interior still nice.
Are the wheels ok?
I would get the money from insurance, find a good roller and rebuild!

Or, try to have them total it and buy if back form them and rebuild this one. Unless the chassis is really bent? Other would know better.

Most importantly I am glad you are ok, and I am sorry for your loss.

The car was actually still running fine after the crash. The wheels are fine. I’ll have to see what the insurance company offers.

I see no need to total it.

The front end looks savable. More pictures of the rest of it would tell the story.
Glad you're OK.

It would have been totaled if that happened in the year it was built. Our ‘82 was totaled 6 weeks after originally purchased after the original owner slid into a curb and folded the right rear wheel under the chassis. It’s got a branded title but is now perfect and agreed valued insured at 85k thru Hagerty. I’m betting they won’t total today. Sorry for the inconvenience BUT more importantly glad you are ok. Who’s the insurer? Do keep us posted, looks like it was a beautiful car.

It would be totaled in my shop unfortunately. I wouldn’t recommend fixing unless you are ok with a branded title and you are willing to pay additional monies out of pocket. The insurance would total it because it’s cheaper to replace than it is to repair

I was planning on keeping it forever and passing on to my boys who love the car. So an R title would not matter to me.

That's what I noticed. That barn is sorry it got in the way.

When the tub on my car was bent, I had two choices. Put the car on a frame rack and stretch it back into 'straight' or get a roller and transfer the nice parts I had. I chose option 2, using a 911 with a good tub but 'deferred maintenance' as they say. Sold the motor, transmission, etc., swapped the parts and now I'm back where I was.

First....is the tub bent? If not, a good 911 body guy can bring her back, but perhaps not cheap. You have some options.

Insurance company makes the 'totalling' decision, and separately might sell (or even give) the car to you.

One more thing. If you do not have 'agreed value' insurance, then the insurance company will also determine the money you get if it is totaled. And if not, then the body shop will fight with the insurance company and the insurance company will win. It's one of those things even the PARF guys agree on. Everybody hates insurance companies.

And if you have a friendly lawyer friend, get him/her involved NOW to take on the insurance company. Did the lady leave the scene?

If the windshield is popped out and the roof bowed is the tub not bent? Hope it can be fixed!

Generally speaking if glass breaks or pops out without being directly involved in the impact , you have problems ....

Could be minor , could be major .

Most loss adjuster “engineer” reports won’t investigate if it’s either of the two and will automatically tick the box ...

Not Professional advice , but simply telling my story of how I think it works from an experience I had around 3 years ago :
Somebody entered my lane on the freeway and whacked the front side of my rangerover pretty hard .
Steering and brakes dissabled , thrown half into passenger seat , before I knew what was really happening I somehow got over over a few lanes of traffic to shoulder whilst watching car parts exploding and cars spinning and hitting k-rail etc all around me .

Major freeeway accident , on socal news sig-alerts , fire-trucks , paramedics , whole freeway shut down while we got towed off , etc .
Both myself and the lady that hit me both had to attend emergency hospital as a result of it . Not sure about anybody else as it was just luck we ended up at the same towing storage facility .

Straight forward uh ?
I’m just driving home from work , doing nothing wrong and got rammed .
Simple .

No .

Somebody apparently hit the lady in the Lexus , that in turn hit me .
So she is not at fault .
In California they look for “root cause” and that driver’s insurance is responsible *.

Unfortunately he was not insured to drive mums car registered in dads name covered
by cousin’s insurance .etc :

Rant coming to an end :
it quickly went from “no problem , it’s totalled and you’ll get replacement plus medical “ , to them saying “minor damage , you cannot be injured” .

Im pretty tough and so was that car , but if a collision is hard enough to shatter rangerover suspension and steering , bend the chassis enough to break the front gearbox/diff surely its reasonable enough to assume the driver got roughed-up a little inside ?

According to them the “preliminary inspection engineer” basically took a few photos (and further research revealed was not qualified in any way to even take a photo never mind call himself an engineer) and the worst was to come when I tried to claim on my health insurance and they told me “auto accidents automatically default to auto insurance”
THE DRIVER THAT CAUSED IT WAS’NT INSURED !!

End result :
I lost a very nice supercharged rangerover .
I lost 6 months earnings .
My credit score has dropped due to around 10k in unpaid medical bills . (Now MUCH more)
I’m spending WAY too much time , all these years later , filing paperwork with my health insurance company .
Apparently I’m being sued for doctor charges from the er visit .
Etc
Etc
Etc

I got paid $5k from my “insurance” company , as unbeknown to me That’s all my un-insured driver cover was .
Minus , an er admission fee and towing and storage cost I got about $3000.00
It seems it doesn’t matter that the driver that actually hit me WAS insured !!!

It leaves me feeling a little bit annoyed after all this time
