The early manifolds had vacuum ports that allowed you to get engine vacuum. My 914-6 has taps on the two outer manifold runners that have vacuum lines connected to get a signal.

![]() The vacuum lines are removed in the photo, but you can see where they attach. Both lines were connected with a T fitting that then provided a balanced vacuum source with decreased pulsing if there was only one tapped source.

I tapped a single line off the middle intake on the driver side manifold w/o any ill effects on my old spec911 with 46mm PMO's.

I went with a high end vacuum pump designed for electric cars. Not an inexpensive route but it’s quiet and works well.

I've used a sporto vacuum tank so you don't run out of vacuum after multiple pumps of the pedal, and a vacuum pump in the smuggler box once. It was kind of noisy, but I'm sure there are quiet ones.

Just a related question.
Does a check valve need to be installed to assure proper brake boost operation ALL the time??? Is this a design consideration for both ITB's and Carb conversions?
