Oil leak, left side rocker arm pins?
I took my car in for some maintenance and told them I have a oil leak on the left side. I put some cardboard down and it hardly made a mark, maybe a drop a week. The work order came back as left side rocker arm pins. I did a search and am still unsure what this means. Do I need to fix it or wait until next year? How does it get fixed?

MHO. Rocker arm pin = rocker arm shaft
Many times, a valve cover gasket is falsely blamed for this. Oil can also leak from the valve train/camshaft lube area to the outside world from one or more rocker shafts due to shaft and/or bore wear or insufficient tightening torque. The latter can cause the rocker shaft to "walk" out of the bore and thus increasing oil flow. There are "RSR" seals that fit into the shaft grooves (2 per) that can help prevent oil leaks at this location. Inspect first, then proceed before springing for a top end rebuild (the next retail step beyond replacing the rocker arm shafts and ????). If structurally sound, can you live with an oil drop or two a week? Sherwood |
