Smuggler box brake line replacement
About to get into a heap of work on the '81 SC, and figured it might be nice to ask before I dig in. I'm going to be replacing two lines that go from the brake master cylinder down under the car. Numbers 8 and 9 in this image:
![]() I haven't lifted the car up yet to check from the underside, so I can't see where the lines exit the smuggler box. From the top, it looks like they just exit the body next to the steering column. Is there supposed to be a grommet or flap or some sort of cover in there, or is it just a big hole? The hard lines will be replaced with soft ones and I want to ensure I don't need to worry about them rubbing on the lip down there. |

It's open there, and the entire area is protected by the undertray. Now that I think about it--pretty weird that it's just open. The hard lines are clipped so there's nothing for them to rub, but with soft lines you'd probably need to lay something in.
Anyway, I'd suggest replacing with hard lines if you do--no need to introduce that length of flex in the main hydraulic distribution.

I just checked my ‘77, here’s a pic..
There’s no grommet but some sponge foam that hardly fills the gap (mouse entry) as the lines exit to under the steering rack cover.

Well I'll be damned, I didn't have foam blocks in mine!
