Wiper Arm Compatbility?

I have an 82SC. My wiper arms are in pretty bad shape due to rock chips etc. I opted to replace them and ordered two from our host.

Apparently the correct current parts are the 964-628-028-01 and 964-628-028-02. These superseded the original parts in the catalog. I chose the "German" brand because they were more expensive than the Dansk but less expensive than the $200+ OEM (each) versions.

I received them and tried to install them. The replacements look great but they are missing the splined interior that matches the splines on the wiper shafts. See photo. My old ones have the matching interior splines. I noticed that even the OEM Porsche units do not have the splines.

Anyone have a suggestions for the correct/matching parts to order?

Hey Ethan,

Yeah that's weird. When I search wiper arm for an SC i get the part you show. When I search for my middie, I get 914-628-314-10-OEM Which is the splined joby.

There are more differences than just the splines in your photo there. There appears to have two steps compared to the single step on your original. Have you measured them?

Ethan, can you remove the cap that hides the nut on your original wiper arm? If so have them powder coated.

Agreed, there are definitely more differences than just of the lack of splines. The length measurement is almost exactly the same as the original. The original has one spring and the new one has two but the overall amount of tension is about the same. Overall I think they’d be a good replacement except for the mating surface. Are there splines on the 964 wiper shafts?

Update: I talked to a rep at our host and they were puzzled as well. They looked through all of the possible replacement wiper arms and none of them had splines. They also agreed that they should have splines. I did a little more digging in these forums and it seems like some people think that when the new wiper arms are pressed/installed onto the shaft, the splines are created in the supposedly softer metal of the wiper arm.

Does this sound correct to anyone?

I suppose that is possible, but if the metal is so soft that it will press splines when tightened, I can't imagine those splines being very strong...

That doesn't sound right to me.

Agreed. That’s why I’m still puzzled about which new wiper arms to get.

I've Cerakoted many sets. Some caps have survived 250F, some melt. So I've been removing caps before prep and paint and using later, new slip on caps. Perfect fit and look great. No pics of them installed.

I'll send you a new pair of mine... if they work you can pay me for them then.

I've sold literally thousands in the last 10 years.

And, yes, there are no splines in the arm, the metal is softer on the arm and the wiper spindle digs into the arm. I happen to have an NOS silver one from the SWB cars, and pic is below.

Price on a pair of arms is $50 plus shipping.

This is interesting. I had no idea! Learn something new every day.

On a related note, it doesn't look like our host sells RHD wiper arms. Can anyone point me in the direction of a place that sells them? Since I'm replacing them and they are now parked on the right side, seems like I might as well purchase the RHD version. I'm assuming the straight one is the same but the one now on the right obviously bends in the opposite direction.
