Vent Hose To Offend Purists

To replace the paper vent hose that connects these two ports:

I purchased the URO hose on the right to replace the factory original, on the left. I may have ordered the wrong size, but what arrived was too large in diameter.

Looking around the shop to see if I had anything that might work, I came upon this:

It’s a section of a replacement hose for my Rigid brand shop-vac; that I got at Home Depot. It’s exactly the right size and durable as heck!

It doesn’t look very ‘porsche-like’ but the color does match the label on the blower hosing.

Isn't that feeding the small rectangular side window defrost vent at the edge of the dash? Just asking. I just recently connected those defrost vents to the flapper boxes, so they can have fresh air or heated air, for defrosting. My car does not have A/C.

Superman, that hose is connected to the evaporator at the "T" (just above the evaporator) that supplies the center vents. It connects to the metal tube protruding from rearmost area on the left side of the trunk. It looks like it might supply the vent, at the edge of the dash, but I'm not certain. If it does, I can't see a similar hose on the right side of the trunk.

I now understand the ventilation system better than I once did, but I haven't yet achieved 'ventilation nirvana' -- I'm still at novice level, hoping my understanding will expand! ;-)

I've added some photos, hoping they may help. I'm sorry that I don't know how to add 'arrows' to photos.

Pat, with that quotation from Emerson -- you made my day! You're a perceptive fellow. Thoreau is a favorite of mine and there was a time when I read a bit of Emerson as well. I should get back to that!

When I took early retirement, I re-imagined Walden in a modern suburb. And I've been living there, ever since!

Now to the Maine woods!! :-)

I yanked my entire ventilation system out. It is over-engineered and under-performs. Besides, I am off to sunny Florida, where maybe I will reconnect the defrosters next year. I may even go full VW on it. In the meantime, I am trying to get the AC working. I took that out 15 years ago.

I like it.

But if you really really really want it to look more porsche like you could paint it black.

Both my flapper boxes have an outlet which feeds the skinny defrost vents. The hose is about an inch in diameter, or a little more. This gets hot air on the side windows or I can turn the vent thingie and get warm air on my torso. A/C air is dry and therefore good for defrosting. Hmmmm....

I kinda thought the A/C air feeds the center dash vents.....and the under-dash area. The very controversial "bow tie" thing behind the console which causes so many threads to be moved to PARF.

Yes. I have mine. Daily run-ins with bunnies and today....interaction with a chipmonk who wasn't scared at a distance of about two feet. The neighborhood eagles are probably just letting them get more plump.

I chose to get mine working properly. It makes enough heat to bake a chicken. VW Beetle systems under perform. 911 systems do not, but they do suffer inadequate maintenance and adjustment.

OMG orange! I am so offended! How could you? You are lucky if you are not shunned and disowned by family. Utterly unbelievable.

I have the same shop vac and know how to use it just like you if anyone disagrees.

Pat, I agree that the vent system is ‘over-engineered.’ I suspect it had to be to fit in the space available. And yes, it does ‘under-perform’ – although I’m not sure it’s any worse than other foreign autos from the era. I recall needing to use a rag or a stray mitten to ‘defrost’ the inside of many a windshield in those days!

The heat in my 911 has always been strong, but air flow has never been great. During my rebuild, I noticed that various ‘flappers’ were not traveling their full distance. I spent a lot of time fiddling with the cables to insure that everything opened and closed completely.

The new blower motor is noticeably more powerful than the old, albeit at the expense of noise. Now that I’ve revamped the entire system, it will be interesting to see how much improvement has been made.

Like you, I pulled the A/C out years ago and just reinstalled it – well, some of it. I found Griffiths very helpful, but also Nostalgia Air in Florida. They don’t specialize in Porsche, but they stock a lot of vents, hoses, parts, etc. Great service from both.

Bill, you’re right, I could paint it. But it’s starting to grow on me – not literally, of course. I mean, I’m not turning pumpkin color. ;-)

Superguy, Welcome to the woods! I’ve let my property get rather shaggy (by my neighborhood’s standards) but boy do I have wildlife! I had a Bard Owl in residence, who liked to spend the day sitting on the deck of my 19’ sailboat! “An owl and a pussycat went to sea...” Funny image.

Both of my ‘skinny vents’ are connected to the orange hose that attaches to the bulbous ‘Tee’ shaped manifold, protruding up from the evaporator (and just under the blower motor) in the center of the trunk. In the photos, you can see how the large outlet from that “Tee” feeds refrigerated air from the evaporator to the center vents.

The smaller outlet (orange hose) supplies refrigerated air to the left side ‘skinny vent’ and possibly the right side, as well. There is a paper hose under the dash that connects to the right side ‘skinny vent’ – but I haven’t traced it’s origin. With all it’s twists and bends, exploring Porsche HVAC is a bit like exploring the Amazon!

And I have the scars to prove it! My hands are so cut up, I look like I’ve been in a brawl with alley cats!

Aaaah, the ‘bow-tie’ thing! I’m planning to use that port to supply one or two vents under the dash/knee-pad. Griffiths has a vent and Nostalgia Air has a number of them.

Bob, thanks for the ‘chuckle of the day’ – this is very funny!

Kudos, Piscator your car has now, officially been MOLESTED....

This heinous transgression is fairly mild, compared to my blasphemous Ferrari molestation.
I posted my violation on the 308 board, pleading poverty, expediency and unforgivably bad taste...
To wit, I had used a black rubber poop pipe connector, (Calder coupling for ABS sewer drain pipe), in place of the "Correct" and sanctified paper and rubber flexible connector from the air intake duct to the air cleaner.
IT Was right on top of the engine, in plain sight, gasp and shudder, for sure vilification and evisceration will likely follow.
I think the pope intervened when I wrote to him begging forgiveness for the sin of using non sanctioned parts (I think the paper/rubber coupler was something like $1847.53 IIRC).
So, good on ya piscator for creativity and balls.

With malice aforethought,
chris

Chris, "OMG" !!! - (as my daughters would put it) -- NOT a p--p pipe!!!

I hope that you called it a "Calder fitting" or a "Calder pipe" !! That, at least, 'sounds' respectable. In fact, it sounds downright 'klassey' -- kinda like it had something to do with the sculptor, Alexander. You might even start another thread on the 308 board, something like, "flushing your Calder pipe for higher output..." ;-)

Thank you Robert. I would agree these factory systems are pretty darned good at providing clean, dry hot air and not as good at plain ventilation. Still, certainly in the northern parts, when properly adjusted as you say, they work just fine.

I'm pretty darned sure my '83 SC fed those side defrosters from the flapper valves, via a small crazy-S-bend hose, not from the plastic part below the blower housing (though my '83 had A/C and had a similar part). Hmmm....

Last night, the owls were hooting at each other. Four or five of them. Pretty cool. One evening there was one VERY LOW-hooting owl communicating with another VERY LOW-hooting owl quite some distance away. There are lots of bunnies in our neighborhood. I wonder if there is a connection.

Superguy, thanks for your comments here and elsewhere!

"...clean, dry hot air and not as good at plain ventilation" -- you're right! I've always thought the heat was marvelous. I'm not expecting a big change in the ventilation, but hopefully fine tuning the flappers will result in some improvement.

Four or five owls?!! That's amazing! I live on a salt marsh in an area that is somewhat wooded. Seeing an owl, here or on our area hiking trails, was once a rare treat. I've never seen more than one at a time, but they do seem to be proliferating, in the last year or more. Interesting you making the connection with the bunnies. I've seen A LOT more of those recently and their appearance does coincide with the owl up-tick.

And the deer are back! They nest in the wooded sections on the perimeter of the marsh and seem to come and go from year to year. Deer don't eat critters, obviously, but the appearance of deer along my marsh does seem to correspond with years where the overall critter-count is high.

RSBob, You really crack me up! -- "...he wouldn't have created OEM." -- Brilliant!
