Drive Shaft Noise

On occasion I hear a knocking noise at idle that does not appear to be coming from the engine. I jack the rear up and find the right drive shaft to be very loose both up and down and left to right and, I can hear the knocking sound when I do this. The left drive shaft seems fine. So I order a drive shaft from Pelican which is due Monday and today I jack the car up to get ready for the install. But now both drive shafts check normal. Any idea what's up here.

One more thing. While the car is up I decided to test for LSD so I spin one wheel in neutral and the opposite wheel does not move. Given w/o LSD it should move in the opposite direction I may have a defective LSD.

This is a relatively new purchase, the records are spotty but at 68K miles the repair shop wrote "left rear axle assembly not OEM, less expensive aftermarket part" so maybe the right is original. There is 72K on the chassis but has seen some track use.

ok, pull them both off & inspect

bolts if stock, can be reused if no damage to threads or wrenching fixture

use new Schnorr washers always

go buy some brake cleaner as you'll use that too
