Clutch throwout arm removal

Hi list,
I need to replace the helper spring on my 915 trans and cant seem to get the arm off. I searched the forums and found several post regarding the same problem but never any solution. Sorry if I have missed one but can anyone help with this question? I'm not sure if its absolutely neccesary to remove it for the helper spring replacement(?). Additionaly, Pelican shows the part as unavailable, any suggestion on where to find a replacement or if I can use a turbo spring?

Cool Removing clutch arm...................

If you are refering to the "long" clutch arm that the Omega spring mounts on, I recently had the same problem. I finally found a small gear puller that could be modified slightly to pull the arm off the shaft. It had rusted or corroded on the clutch shaft to the point that it simply would not pull off! When I go to re-assemble the clutch arms, I am going to polish out the hole in the arm with a wheel cylinder hone to remove any corrosion or foreign matter. Look for a small gear puller with adjustable arms. Even then you will probably have to do some grinding to be able to get hold of the arm securely enough to pull it off the shaft.

Good luck!

Some cars (apparently with little rhyme or reason) also have a pin holding that thing on.

First, make sure all the pressure is off of it. If it moves freely back and forth a little, it's ready to come off. You did remove the circlip?

I'm trying to do the same thing today. I already removed the circlip & short arm. The long arm on mine does have a pin that is apparently holding it to the shaft, as the arm moves freely on the shaft, it just hit something that I can't see (I assume there is a recess in the shaft where the pin fits). The pin looks like it is simply pressed in, but trying to tap it out with a punch yielded no movement. This is difficult with the gearbox in the car, but I will be dropping the engine/transmission tomorrow, so I will have a better working environment to attack this. I'll post a picture later of the pin I am referring to.

Part is available on Pelican. There is a replacement number that doesn't show up if you search the regular method. I just ordered one a couple of days ago.

Part No.: 915-116-064-01-M260 $78.25

like said above, some have the pin, some don't. The way you describe yours, even without seeing the picture, i can tell you have the pin.

It needs to be driven out. Maybe try heating it up with a propane torch a bit if it is stubborn. With some heat, it'll drive right out.

Here's a pic of the pin that needs to be driven out.

Very top center of the pic. You cannot remove the arm with that pin in place.

Carrman,

That's the pin.

After reading the post above stating that the arm needs to be removed in order to separate the engine & transmission, I guess it's best to get this pin out now while everything is still in the car as it would be difficult to get under there after they're out. Oh well, more fun under the car tomorrow.

Here's a picture I snapped earlier as well:

Frank, did you confirm you need to remove that pin? Can it be driven out from either direction?

I never was able to remove the pin in mine, but I did separate the engine and transmission when I rebuilt the transmission years ago. Unfortunately I don’t remember the particulars.

Yes, it had to be removed and I drove it out with a punch. IIRC, the pin can be driven out from either end, but in my case it was sticking out a bit on one end, so I just kept going in that direction.

I looked through my archives from that rebuild, and found a photo showing the shaft with the arm removed. You can see the groove in the shaft where the pin locks it into place.

An air hammer and pointed bit gets it moving, then finish with hammer and punch. Leave it out on reassembly, you don't need it.
