Fuel relay

Hi, I am new to this forum, I have recently bought a 1976 2.7 targa and am having trouble with the fuel relay, (I have replaced it with a new one).
With the ignition on the fuel pump does not run (also replaced) however if I jiggle the relay at a slight angle, half way out, and it looks like contact 86 is not in its hole the pump with then run and the engine will start, any thoughts?

By the way the car has been stored for 6 years and was not running when I got it.

Properly connected wires on the injection, the pump won’t run. Factory started an airflow sensor switch about 76. Key on, lift the airflow sensor and pump should come on. One system of the relay.
You can run the pump by jumping terminals 30 and 87a at the relay.

New round relays (and old ones) may have the relay pins squished. This does not allow good contact between the relay and electrical socket. Try inserting a razor blade into the splits of the relay pins to spread them and make sure you have the pins in the proper sockets.

I have removed the plug from the air flow sensor and re installed the FP relay, now the car starts ok, does this mean the fuel sensor needs replacing.

Also when the engine is running and I lift the float in the air filter there is a squealing noise, should this happen?

James,

Do yourself a favor and spend sometime reading DKLever’s post regarding testing FP relay socket terminals. It will give you a better understanding how the FP relays works and finding the culprit to fix your problem. Highly recommended for ‘76~’83 CIS owners.

For your car (‘76 CIS), the FP should not run with the ignition @ ON position. If it does, you have some abnormality in your CIS. The ground for terminal #85 is missing. There should be ground present if the motor is not running unless the air flow sensor plug has been disabled or disconnected.
