Speaker Help - Installing Continental Radio
 

Hello:

I’m installing a new Continental radio in my 1985 911.

When I hook up all four speakers, the tears have very little sound—at almost max volume, I’m getting an acceptable volume from the rears. The fronts sound fine at any volume level.

I’ve played with balance and fader controls, and have played with polarity.

I can’t figure why there’s so much difference between the front and rear speakers.

I’m in the home stretch on my installation and this makes no sense to me.

Does your 85 have the factory front/rear fader adjustment on a separate dial/thumbwheel switch on the center console? If yes, could that be adjusted with all the bias towards the front? Assumes you're running thru the factory connections. Best of luck, John

It would be nice if the Continental radio would also come with line level outputs so you could add an amp directly. You might find it easy to run new speaker wires to the rear if problems continue. We’re you able to connect into the factory harness?

The PO had a mess of wires in the car. I removed a huge section between the head unit and the rear speakers and it cleared it up. I now have good sound all around.

Factory front rear bias switch uses common ground, most newer stereos use isolated grounds for each speaker. I have had to run new wires to all speakers.

What gauge wire is best to run if considering an amp in future? I know the Continental doesn't allow for one - but my previous owner cut the harness, so want to go ahead while I have the carpet out to replace with heavier gauge wire should I ever need to hook an amp up. Thanks.
