Thumbs up Dansk uber alles!

My fans and detractors alike will breathe a sigh of relief now, knowing that my exhausting exhaust quest is over at last. For tonight I bolted up a Dansk single-in/dual-out, and it's fabulous. I also have a Fabspeed premuffler in place of the cat, and stock heat exchangers. The premuffler is slightly cocked, resulting in the left pipe sitting a tad lower than the right. At this point I'm not going to fuss. It's not a show car. The OE stamped design of the Dansk fits so much better than the GHL and B&B "welding project"-style mufflers I tried.

I know the Dansk sound has been described a zillion times before, but here are my two cents, for what they're worth: it still sounds very "Porsche." It gives the car a bit more depth and rasp. I can still hear the fan, the induction note, the transmission, etc. A deeper exhaust note is evident at idle, but there's no resonance, and it never takes over in the cabin at all. I don't have to listen to the stereo any louder than I used to with the stock muffler. WOT and higher revs produce a nice howl, but it's not Cessna material.. just very sweet. A much more "German" choice than the burly, V8-like B&B single-in/dual-out I still have. (anyone want the thing?)

And my seat-of-the-pants dyno gives it two thumbs up as well. The engine revs up and down more freely than with the stock muffler, and I definitely feel some more pull in the high end of the spectrum. There's no loss of low end grunt, like I got with the GHL headers & 2-in/2-out setup I had tried.

Ahhh, finis!

Did you compare other mufflers? A lot of people seem to like the Monty.

Hi there Hugh
Yep just done the same on my 85 Carrera and I think the same as you just a very
gutsy metalicy Porsche sound. I also added a K&N air filter and drilled the air box now even sounds better.

I have a Monty single out with SSIs and it's wearing on me. The drone at idle and at constant speeds below about 3000 RPM is a bit annoying. When I'm on the gas, the exhaust note almost all but goes away in the cockpit and I hear mostly engine, but around town, it's getting old.

I had a gutted stock muffler mated to a cat pipe and stock heaters, and, although it didn't have the same 911 sound, it was much less intrusive.

I'm probably being picky, because it's much less annoying than some B&Bs I've heard.

I can't complain with my Monty, although there is a marked difference in "the boom effect" (Copyright 2002 - My Girlfriend ) between driver's and passenger's seats. I let a buddy drive my 911, while I rode shotgun and was amazed at the difference in sound. He commented on it straight away, too.

Have you always had resonance with the SSI/Monty setup? I rode in a SSI-style Dansk with Dansk 2 in 1 out muffler and didn't hear any resonance at all? Could it be just the Monty muffler? I remember others reporting their Monty's to be free from resonance?

I didn't really notice it during the first month or so. It has actually gotten worse over time. The muffler was only 6-8 months old when I bought it used, and I've had it for maybe 8 months and have only driven 600 miles or so in that time.

I've heard of mufflers changing over time, but for a 100% stainless Monty, I didn't expect this.

I also feel engine vibrations more, like in the pedals. I thought this might be the club sport motor mounts I installed, but they don't look any different from stock ones. Any ideas about that?

Maybe I should put it on a lift and check for integrity or any mounting issues that could be causing the vibrations. I haven't had the opportunity to do this since the install.

Did you do the Stock 2 out conversion first before you went with the Dansk? If so, how did that turn out?

thanks

SSI, 2 in 1 out Dansk sounds pretty good, no annoying drone like a "ricer"

Yeah, I was going to modify an OE muffler to have dual outlets, but decided it was: 1) too big a pain, and 2) never gonna be as nice as the Dansk.
