Front Wheel Bearing Replacement: Replace the "spacer ring"?
 

Hey Pelicans,

I'm preparing for the next wave of updates/repairs on my 84 Carrera and have a question for the experts.

When replacing my front wheel bearings, should I install new spacers rings (Part No.: 901-341-623-00) on each side?

I've seen some threads (yes, I searched) where people have said their rings were fine and therefore not replaced, so this might be a situational replacement part. However, I'm trying to gauge if this part is a likely/recommended replacement so that I can get the parts ordered for my tech, just in case.

I for one did not replace the spacer rings as they didn't show any wear. I did replace the grease seal though that fits onto them and is fitted to the back of the hub.
The bearings run into their own race and any wear should be limited to the bearing and it's race. The 'spacer' is only touched by the rubber ring in the grease seal, so if you replace the seal but keep the spacer you should be fine. Mine isn't leaking any grease after 6 months so it looks good.

You rarely if ever need to replace them, but if you do don't forget to order the o-rings also.

Regarding the o-rings, I was planning to order these regardless of whether I purchased spacer rings. Should I skip these if I’m not likely to replace the spacer rings?

Getting the race off and new one on is a major PITA if you dont have a press. BIG freaking hammer is your friend.

You can only get to the o-rings by removing the spacers. So no need for either unless the spacer is somehow damaged.

Regarding install, I'm having a dealer do the work so they'll have their tools (or their trusty BFH). :D
