'78 911 SC with disassembled engine, How much?

How much would you pay for a '78 911 SC with a disassembled engine and need of a valve Job? The car is in overall good condition with the exception of the engine. I was thinking of offering $6000 as is and use waynes book to assemble the engine after a machine shop does the valve job? Is this a good idea?

6K is too much, unless it's low mileage and showroom nice. wrecking yards buy those basket cases for $2500 all day. so $3500-$4000 would be more reasonable. in the end you want to come out better than "break even" for all your efforts.
