Poor Paint Job/Color Change ??
Wanted to get some opinions. I am considering buying a '72 911 for sale. It has properly installed steel 930 flares. This is the look I'm after, but wouldn't really want to flare a nice early car myself, so this already being done is a plus. The car would be used for weekend street and some auto-x. The big negative is that the car was originally red/orange and the current owner painted it white. The really bad part is that it was a cheapie job where if you lift the front trunk carpet, it's still original color. In some ways, I guess this is good in that it would be easier to change back. After the mechanical stuff was done, I couldn't afford to change the color back for a while, so I'd have to live with it as is. I know this is a subjective question, but how big of a deal is this? I've never been overly concerned with cosmetics; mechanical and performance was more of a concern. But I have to admit, I have aspirations of attending RGruppe type events and getting unrelenting grief about something like this wouldn't be too cool. Sorry, don't have any pics yet.

Hey 6now, the PO of my 87 Carrera did a color change from red to black and it was an earl schieb job too. Red traces were everywhere to be seen. I removed every panel, window, seal, and trim part stripped primed and blocked sanded, and painted everything black. Polished each part to perfection, and reassembled everything with new seals and gaskets. The car looks better than it did from the factory. Anything short of this is just not worthy of the Porsche crest on the hood, IMHO...

Au contraire, my 72 was baby poo in color (sepia brown) so I had to change it within the limits of my pocketbook (~4K). I did a bare metal takedown and respray as gulf blue. Did not shoot the trunk and the cabin so I still have brown in places. I went to RGRUPPE rendezvous earlier this month and nobody snubbed me because of my incomplete paintjob If fact, my car was even quite dirty because we came from Denver, (had to do five miles on dusty road excursion to get to a special hot springs location in Nevada ). I bet we had the most fun driving to Monterey--> central Nevada (Highway 50) @ 95-130 mph was a hoot. However a 2.4S MFI engine gets thirsty at those speeds!

Sounds to me like it is already bugging you.
I would think that the rise in resale value would reduce the long term cost of the job (assuming its done right) to almost nil. Do it now if you can afford it... or do it as soon as you can wing it. Just get her back to one color asap! (I think going back to red would be your best bet)

I'm w/toolman on this one.. do it right or don't do it at all.
the labor is all bull work.. the painting requires 1/2 a brain.. but it'll take some serious bucks to buy materials and equipment for a good shoot.. BUT, IMO, it's a labor of love. or don't even start the project...........Ron

Thanks for the replies. It would be nice to have a perfect car, but better to have one with a few warts than none at all. I'm going to take the next step on this car. I'll post pics if it works out
