1. PDK (new car..lol )
2. C2T engine into SC
3. 3.6 into '72
4. GHL exhaust
5. Wevo shifter

Hard to pick one that stands out after that as I upgraded suspension/brakes/wheels, etc. on all of my early project cars..

Geronimo 08-16-2019 02:59 PM

C2t and a 3.6 I hate you. :)

Another vote for Rennshifter. Probably the most satisfying bolt on modification for the time & money.

Cup holder might be second on the list, haha

Getting rid of the A/C system and the fan assist system on the left side of the engine feeding the heat exchangers. Makes it so I can see and reach both sides of the engine, and also improves the heating when needed.

Yea, but no AC. and crappy heat instead. You can live with that is the cooler climates. I have driven my 911 in zero Fahrenheit, and 118 heat and a 135 degree heat index, and been very comfortable.

The important thing, you made the car what YOU want, not what I think is right. That is what matters. I will admit, it does look better. But I personally prefer function over form. YMMV.

Superman 08-17-2019 12:36 PM

Agreed. In the pacific northwest, "function" means decent heat and virtually no reason for A/C.

Kraftwerk 08-17-2019 06:35 PM

I like this question.

Lightening the car: A.C. delete, side skirt delete, rear seat delete.
Turning the gages was a must with speeds on the Autobahn, 80-100 Turning the gages was a must can actually see the tachometer what is happening speed-wise. (free) Would like to reduce more weight eventually.
Sometimes I miss having A.C. on hot days..

Not expensive: I love my MoMo Prototypo nice size /some dish.
Sparco front seat has been great to keep me planted and optimal position. ( got these things used and reasonably priced )

Some expense: Elephant after-market stuff: I am hoping my suspension re-fresh (almost done!) is my favorite mod ..lowered w/ new rubber everywhere, new mounts etc.

David, have you considered a quick release instead of a spacer?
I use a Tekniq quick release on a momo hub.
My steering wheel (Prototipo) is about an inch closer now, more room between upper edge of the dash and steering wheel.
And it also is a good anti theft device.

Overall attitude of the car...964 cams. Power band is tremendous and the idle chop turns heads everywhere you go :)

964 cams in mine as well, no complaints.
My car sounds Harley like at idle. To be honest, I prefer a less lopey, more fluent, more modern sound.
I thought it was due to the SSI’s and M&K (regular dual out).
It makes sense that the 964 cams have something to do with it...

Anyone know how to make it a bit smoother sounding?

If you want to quiet it down put a stock 2in 1out muffler on there. I had one on mine, which also has 964 cams, and it was pretty quiet but sounded good on throttle. I thought it was too quiet for a hot rod, so I changed to a 2in 2out. The diameter of the muffler outlet pipes makes a difference, bigger diameter seems to have more bass (that Harley sound).

Geronimo '74 08-17-2019 07:53 PM

My car is in the shop now.
I asked to cap the right side of the muffler to quiet it down a bit.
Hopefully the lopey idle will be less, but I’m not very sure.
I prefer to keep the M&K because it is such a high quality, lightweight muffler.
But you make a good point. (And Dansk is not that bad either)

An extra condensor for the A/C.
SW Chip
964 cams
these things make me smile every time i drive it.

Moving forward...

My favorite thing I've done to the car is putting it on a twin post rotary lift!!!!

The best upgrade was to dump the AC and add the Carrera cooler. When I'd visit my dad in Santa Barbara the 74 had absolutely scary oil temps and almost no oil pressure.

Looking forward to getting the car back on the road, upgraded suspension, quick rack, adjustable rear Carrera bar, RSR flywheel, 6 pound alum clutch, Rennshifter, stomsky, duck, recovered sport seats, new brakes and MK 2-2 sport and.....stock, (150 hp) 2.7
Not sure which of the goodies is going to get the "favorite" tag.
Still pushing it at 71 - can't wait to get it to thunderhill.

1972 911T I've had for 20 years with 234,000 miles

Front fender full sized oil cooler
Removed right front battery box to improve airflow over oil cooler
Took my 'one battery' and moved it to the smugglers box
Raised Bilsteins to lower the front
Replaced stock front brakes with SC calipers 20% larger
Fiberglass hood
Recaro seats
Wevo shifter
Removed half of door panels
Australian Superlite wheels 15 x 7 about 1.5lbs heavier than Fusch
Aluminum trailing arms
Fiberglass ducktail
1981 3.0L twin plug built to turn 8500rpm
9.5:1 245 crank hp @ 6900rpm and 227 ft/lbs torque @ 4800 rpm, bullet proof!
40 mm webers opened up to 42mm

Replaced my injectors with the new four hole EV6 Bosch injectors (0-280-155-703) on my 87 Carrera resulting in amazing low end torque.

david.avrahami@ 08-19-2019 12:02 PM

my best upgrade

Over the last 22 years, I replaced and upgraded my 87 Carrera with the most common parts discussed in the forum.
The most noticeable improvement, however, was to acquire Sal Carceller MAF kit that consisted of a complete rewrite of the performance chip in a customized DME, A much accurate air flow meter (solid state) and matching cone filter. a modern set of efficient fuel injectors and all of the above work in harmony together to provide smooth performance of the engine, precision and reliability.

My '79 SC had a broken headstud problem :( but my mechanic suggested putting the newly rebuilt 930/10 engine with 964 cams and SSIs that came in my donor car I had stored away.

Wow. A completely different engine. The '79 ROW had some torque and went well. But the '82 engine with subtle mods goes like an over-reved sewing machine. Not as much torque but it revs out very smoothly. More power definitely. It's quite happy with 6,000 RPM gearshifts from second gear upwards.

Geronimo 08-19-2019 12:36 PM

Interesting, I would think you'd rather have the heads from the 79 on that engine.

Rodsrsr 08-19-2019 03:09 PM

My favorite upgrade? Those bits hanging below the rear bumper. :D
