Replacing trombone with Radiator

does one typically need to add oil after the replacement, I assume beside spillage that the rad would hold more then the trombone?

Not that the radiator more oil but there will be oil in the trombone that will need to be accounted for when you check your oil.

Easy way to find out is to get the engine to operating temperature and check the oil level.

I've got Mocal waiting to install in place of trombone. There's no doubt trombone holds measurably more oil than Mocal fender unit. (Begs question: how efficient is Mocal rad compared to trombone? Plan to take inlet & outlet temps at car's hard oil line fittings for both units to find out.)

I don't know about the Mocal unit but the Porsche Carrera unit that replaced my Trombone was the best upgrade I'd done....the trombone is worthless in hot temps and I can drive hard in 110 degree Az summers with the radiator on my 3.0 and stay at about 205...yesterday 109 degree ambient I did not touch 210. With my old trombone add 50+ degree's to that and I'd have to drive gently.

did you have to relocate horns to do your install? (i have a 77)

Discseven 08-16-2019 03:40 PM

Am no oil temp wizard but 205 OT under a hard drive in 110 ambient... that sounds good. Dug around to find Porsche Carrera cooler and results were not definitive. I bought into Mocal hoping it's plug & play. Am not thrilled with the volume of oil it holds. Should have done more research.

778... have you replaced your trombone? If so with what?

When I replaced my trombone cooler earlier this summer, about 1/4 of a quart of oil came out of it and some oil dripped out of the hardlines. So...not much oil needs to be added if at all.

Yes...I got rid of the trumpets and bought smaller round horns...just as loud..put them in the opposite front wheel well where the huge water tank 'was'.

I believe the Carrera unit works so well due to the block off surround that hugs the wheel well arch.....I put a simple block off below and forward so that the air is forced thru the radiator and not around or down.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1566010863.jpg

"De Oppresso Liber" So good to see guys from Ft Bragg on here.

Main difference; one is a liquid-to-air radiator, the other is a hollow tube. In terms of surface area, no contest.

Elephant racing can provide the parts to do the deed.

I installed the mocal kit many years ago on my old SC and it was a marked improvement over the trombone. I even tracked it for a few years prior to converting the car to a racer moving to a front mounted cooler for the higher demand with no ill effects even with days of mid 80's ambient temps with the mocal.

points made here about blocking off around the cooler to more effectively direct air through the cooler is advisable. with both the mocal and subsequent front mounted unit I used the material for insulating hot water lines around the perimeter to seal it off more effectively. the stuff that is akin to rollbar padding. I also fabbed a stone guard for the mocal out of 1/4" screen in a frame like used for under home crawl space vents. none of this was hacked in as I did it in a way it did not look jerry rigged and was effective. your needs for form v. function may be different than mine, but it worked well and could not be noticed really by the purist type. the 1/4" mesh allowed for great air flow and kept the larger debris thrown from the tire from hitting and possibly compromising the cooler surface in the fender well.

the perceived down side to the mocal is the 12AN fittings, but unless you are tracking the car extensively in hot temps IMO the mocal is a great upgrade. the mounting kit is also very well conceived if you don't mind drilling into the headlight bucket. I say you are on the right track to providing better cooling for your car w/o spending $2k or more on the Carrera cooler set up.
