This has been driving me nuts for two weeks now.

1974, brand new washer pump, bench checked pump, and works great.

I installed in car, pull wash lever and nothing.

1. when I pull lever the wipers kick on, if I hook my meter up to the pump feed wires I show 11.86 volts when pulled BUT pump will not kick on

2. If I run two jumper wires from pump to battery, pump kicks on and sprays no problem.

3. I have continuity between pump ground and chassis.

Old wiring has too much resistance?

Try just jumping + wire. If it still won’t run then points to a bad ground. Then keep + with original wiring and jumper - and see if the problem persists. That should confirm if the problem is in one wire or the other or both.

I agree with above, too much resistance. I would connect the wiring to the pump with your volt meter at the pump terminals. Then you can see what voltage the pump is getting when you pull the switch. If the voltage is low I would suspect restiance at switch contacts, or connections.

Install a relay. Problem solved.

Check the ground side. 11.86v should be enough to get the pump to do something. Seems like the circuit is not completing.

Funny story. I spent a day checking the wiring trying to figure out why my headlight washers would work after finding a NOS pump to install.
Turns out the headlights have to be on to power the circuit.
