It started off as a simple valve adjustment...

...and quickly evolved into this :D

What an awesome and beautiful lump

Because??

mtl911sc 08-22-2019 06:19 PM

Decided to finally fix the leaks that made such a mess of the engine, and which also made the valve adjustment job pretty unpleasant - everything was coated in a dirty oil residue.

dannobee 08-22-2019 06:23 PM

At one of my first jobs, the old guy who owned the place could whip out a 911 engine in less than a half an hour. I swear he'd pull it out for anything more than an oil change (slightly exaggerating, but not by much). After awhile, I felt the same way, too. Valve adjustment AND an oil leak from something on top? It's coming out!

It started as a valve adjust......
And then a head stud fell out:eek:
Fixed it with a 3.6L:D

Gotta love that jack stand , tripod (?) and the rotted pallet.

Canada Kev 08-22-2019 07:55 PM

So... did you get your valves adjusted...? ;)

yep. at first glance one wonders how it can support these 200+ kg of weight, uh...

911tracker85 08-23-2019 05:23 AM

Rotted pallet? nah that is just nicely weathered....

but do wonder why you used it?

I am also moving toward the 'pull the engine' for anything more involved than oil change. same with my 944s for anything involving getting to the bell housing.

good luck.

Same here. In 2003, pulled the lower valve covers for a routine valve adjustment and it started raining headstuds. Engine drop #1.

Seven engine drops later, I have the tools and checklists to take the stress out of the process. Still takes almost two hours to get it out and on the stand, but can do it alone and know I'm not damaging anything.

Think you could share the list of tools and checklists? I’m always on the lookout for those who have created such guides - I’ve not pulled an engine yet, but my oil consumption figures indicate I’ll have to do so...

You have been blessed. That engine chose you as its rebuilder.

Praise be to the Porsche Flat 6.

76FJ55 08-23-2019 08:17 AM

What lift do you have? I'm considering getting a 4 post and the engine obviously fits between the rails of your.

wildcat077 08-23-2019 09:35 AM

Well ... that's one way of doing a valve adjustment ... lol
After the last one i did , i decided to install a 95 3.6, no more valve adjustments ... wooooohooo !

pmax 08-23-2019 09:54 AM

The lift lowers enough for the jack ?

Trackrash 08-23-2019 10:31 AM

Any broken studs?

Someone has to ask....

Just tallying up the $$ for everything I want to do while it's out, which could take a while lol. Oh, and waiting to receive my valve adjustment tool.

Good eye pmax, that's indeed an inverted jackstand to back up the jack.

Rotted pallet was outside for over 9 years, it was what my 4-post lift was delivered on so it's appropriate ;)

No broken studs, the stud gods are smiling on me (for now anyway).

Just needed the extra height for the jack not to be maxed out before lifting the car, and didn't have the necessary wood (2x4, 4x4 etc) lying around.

Well yes & no. My lift is a Dannmar D-7 and I did what others have done on this forum. Decided to move the free rail i.e. the one without the hydraulic cylinder out as far as possible, which gave me the necessary extra few inches of clearance between the ramps. The ramp simply rests on the frame underneath so not much to move it.

Didn't have the stomach to hang the car's ass over the back of the lift, which seems to be another popular alternative when doing a drop on a 4-post.

Actually the issue was getting the jack high enough to support the engine/trans before pulling their respective mounting bolts. My jack maxes out at 22" which wasn't high enough to still be able to get under the lift to remove the transmission bolts. The extra height gained with the pallet etc made it a lot easier. Then it was just a matter of carefully raising the lift/car off of the engine.

Of course, now I can't move the engine anywhere but plenty of space to work underneath the car since it's not going anywhere either.

wildcat077 08-23-2019 11:43 AM

Did you lift the car off the engine ?

I made a sling and picked up the rear of the car with an engine hoist using the two holes for the engine mounts in which i inserted two large eyebolts.
Had to make two stands out of wood blocks to get get the front wheels off the ground about 12 inches and i was able to slide the engine out from under the car without removing the rear bumper ...

Ahhhhhh ...memories !!!

mtl911sc 08-23-2019 07:04 PM

Yup, car lifted and engine stayed put.
