Angry Alternator Bearing Replacement?

Help!! This morning my alternator / fan bearing started making noise. When I pulled over I could smell the damage. I checked the fan, and I could wiggle it back and forth on the shaft, so I am assuming that the bearing is fried. Could I simply re-tighten the fan onto the shaft, eliminating the wobble, is am I out of luck? Also, do I have to replace the whole alternator ($$ouch!!) or can I get a new bearing.

Any advice or inspiration would help. I had to abandon the car in a neighborhood and catch the bus the rest of the way to work.

It Depends

You need to check for damage to the hub part of the fan and
to the outer pulley half. I had wallowed out both...but they
are steel and could be repaired. Usually caused by improper
number of washers behind and in front of the pulley.
If it is bearings, you can check with a local shop as to replacing
them, or go for a new/rebuilt alternator...

Second reading of your post

After re-reading...you said you could wiggle fan on the shaft?
If the shaft is stationary...then it is not bearings...it would be
wear or damage to the boss part of the fan...like I had...
If the shaft wiggles into the alternator...then it would be
bearings or worse...
Good luck
