Need help with turn signals

OK, I am clearly an electrical idiot. I am replacing my worn out turn signal housings and lenses with a new European style set from Dansk.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1566730915.jpg

I have been wrestling with the wiring unsuccessfully thus far. Initially, turn signals were working on both rear lights and the left front, but not the right front where I was trying the figure out the correct wiring layout. In the process I believe I crossed a couple of wires and heard a “pop.” Now, no turn signals anywhere.

I replaced #9 and #10 fuses but still no turn signals, though the parking lights seem to work. So what stupid thing have I done and how do I fix it? Thanks.

Have you checked the turn signal relay? Also try your hazards, do they still work?

The relay is located behind the fuel gauge if i recall, but you can access it from the trunk also by reaching back by the deck lid hinge.

Progress (I think)

OK, on the right side I think the Black/Red wire powers the parking lights and the Black/Green wire powers the turn signal. Is that correct? If so, what is the black wire for?

Pchip,

If this is your 1987 911 then you can find the diagram here : http://911c1.de/porsche/Schaltplaene/plaene1-10_carrera_32.pdf

On page 2 sections A-B-C rows 1 to 3 you can find the front lights and blinkers. US cars (variant M553) differ from Europeans .

If you are working on another year, let me know, So we can check the correct wiring diagram.

As for the popping sound : fuse, relay for blinkers or bulbs blown ?

I hate to say this but if you are not using a multimeter in conjunction with the correct model year schematic then you have a high probability of making a wiring error. Since you heard a pop and none of your signals are working then you have added a new failure to the list of faults. As mentioned earlier you may have blown a fuse, relay or damaged a switch contact. Do not replace any components until you compare the actual wiring to the correct schematics. Once you are assured the wiring is correct then you can use the multimeter to check the circuit and fault isolate to the bad component or wire.

Update

Power is back up and lights are working except for the turn signal I am fiddling with. The pop was the fuse for the fog lights which I replaced.

Still trying to figure out what the third wire is for and where I should connect it but haven’t had a chance to look at the suggested schematics which I will tonight. Thanks.

Can you confirm the model year of the car ?

Progress...

Thank you Frank for the link to the wiring layouts, they are much better than the ones I have been using from Bentley.

I have wired the right light per the wiring diagram and everything works EXCEPT the turn signal is not BLINKING? I can hear the relay (?) clicking but light just stays on. What did I miss?

ground issue?

timmy2 08-26-2019 09:39 PM

Correct bulb? Installed correctly?
Check for continuity from fuse to lamp? Fuse is good?

Update

OK, it appears I now have everything wired correctly. Parking lights work and turn signals work. But, all the lights are dim. This usually means a bad ground somewhere and I have checked all my connections and they seem good. ?

Bulbs are correct and new. With different wiring configurations I had the lights bright but would get no turn signal flashing. I know I am missing something simple but haven't found it yet.

Is the wiring at the light switch or stalk reversed. I have a US car too and one of the wires is for the permanent light (same lightbulb, double filament), the other is for the blinker coming from the relay.
In my car both are 'black/white' cables coming in to the headlight area and you need to test which one coes from the relay ('Blinkgeber' on the diagram)

Pchip 08-27-2019 02:08 AM

I will check, thanks.

To be clear, all my wiring work has been done in the right light bucket. Also, the dim lights are noted in the parking lights while I have the headlight disconnected. I haven’t reinstalled the headlight at this point. Don’t know if that makes a difference.

Opened mine again, this is what I have (MY85) on the LEFT side
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1566904128.jpg

Left = cable entry from relay/switches
BRN GND
YEL/GRN Headlights
BLU ? (Scheinwerfer?)
BLK/WHT Blinker
BLK/GRY City lights (light switch pos2) - feeds into spade connector

Right = cable passthrough to blinkers/side lights
BRN GND
BLK/WHT To blinker
GRY/RED To side lights

<edit:>
The blinker light has two filaments and one is connected to the BLK/WHT 'blinker' operation, the other to the BLK/GRY sidelight (low output).
Maybe one of your filaments has burned out ? Check with an ohmmeter ?
