Stupid crankshaft timing question...

I'll figure this out when I get around to adjusting the valves, but curious about the crankshaft timing on these engines. Are they even fire, or?

Embarrassed I don't know this already... ;/

Even fire every 120 degrees. You can usually look at the distributor cap of a motor and tell.
They do have a unique firing order though which I think makes them sound the way they do. (that and the gear driven IMS).

Quasi,

The first thing you need is to understand and learn the basic configuration of a 911 engine particularly your car model. Get a maintenance manual/s and read them. Some people are quick to learn because of previous background or experience. Others just take longer to grasp and understand how things are done.

We all started some where and don’t feel embarrass to ask questions. But the more you are acquainted with the subject, the more you are able to make better and meaningful questions. These are the basic things you need to know before you attempt doing a valve adjustment for your 911:
1). Did you know where cylinder #1 is located and the rest?
2). Did you know what is Z1 TDC #1?
3). Did you know what direction to turn your crankshaft?
4). Do you have an inductive timing light?

Don’t be embarrassed if you didn’t know all the correct answers to the above questions. You will have plenty of opportunity to learn them as you develop your skill. BTW, what model/year is your car? Keep us posted. Thanks.

Tony

@pampadori - thanks, had a feeling that was the case, but they have such a great syncopated beat going down the road it made me wonder. My favorite engines have been the odd-fire Honda VFRs btw...

@boyt911sc - appreciate the encouragement, thanks. I’m not new to engines, just Porsche. Muscle cars and bikes previously...
