Don't question John Walker! Exhaust studs

Against the advice of John I felt I HAD to remove one stud as it was much longer than the others and was pretty ragged. I tried everything, heat, vice grips, double nut(broke half the stud off with that one). Then in a final act of desperation I heated her up good and cherry then believe it or not I was able to get a good bite with a pipe wrench, yes I said pipe wrench. Don't laugh, it worked. I got very lucky on this one and it could have gotten ugly. Lesson learned. I could not help but laugh as I removed the stud with my HUGE pipe wrench.

Cool

I, too, have ignored good advice I've received on this board. Glad it worked out OK.

Heating up a stud will make it expand in the hole. . .not what you want.

Glad to hear you got it out okay.

So that is where my big pipe wrench is! Here I am out on a call this afternoon, go to the truck and no blasted wrench! You should have seen me trying to loosen those pipes in Mrs. Johnson's place with one of those 'grip wrenches' that fool on tv advertises!

Bring that wrench back to the shop tomorrow. (Exactly WHAT got 'cherry red'?) IF you burned up my wrench with that torch, then buy me a new one!

Just to clarify, I heated it up to break any adhesive bond(locktite) that may be on the stud. Also, sorry bout that pipe wrench boss I gave mine to Jose and that b*astard never gave it back. Anyway your so rarely out in the field I figured you wouldn't need it. Heck I've got half your tools with me now.
