Are Starters Dated

Before I decide to buy a new or rebuilt Bosch starter for my 1971 Targa, I have a question.
Are Bosch startes dated for the year built? I believe the starter on my 56,000 mile Targa has the original starter.
I have all the maintenance documents and don't see where it was ever replaced.
If they are dated, I will want to keep it, so where can I send the starter to be rebuilt?
Thanks in advance.

I can't say for certain about starters, but in my experience pretty much all Bosch parts have a date code on them somewhere.

Check for a local alternator repair shop. They should be able to rebuild or rewire your starter. A local shop will be more willing to not paint or otherwise disturb any original numbers or markings, if that is truly important to you.

I would have it rebuilt just because I think the older ones are better than the new ones.

not many miles on it, is it bad or do you just want it "new"

I much prefer a local shop to rebuild one than a "new"one that is like a remanafactured one, or made in Brazil or China.

Same thing with alternators.

If you are trying to keep your car as original as possible, that starter rebuilt is the way to go. I finally ditched my Bosch starters because even the local shops can't get them to keep working when they get a long hard heat soak. If I drive on a road trip for 12 hours in the summer heat, I don't want to experience the silence of a starter that refuses to turn. Wait 30 to 40 minutes, and it fires right up. I went with the smaller high torque starter, and it has been flawless. I can drive 920 miles, on a 100 degree day, and it still starts the engine.

And just to be clear, a 4 to 6 hour road trip was not enough. It took an all day road trip to cause the starter to lock up. If I shut the car off, and started it within a minute or so, it would fire up. Only after sitting for 15 minutes after running for 12 hours was it an issue.

That is all off topic.

Just get your current starter rebuilt. Cheaper, and better.

My 70 and 72 911 Bosch starters have the 3 digit date code stamped by the part number. The bosch solenoids are also dated coded. Google "Bosch Date Code" and you'll find the decode table.

Gents,
Thanks I will look into my starter, and find a local shop.
