kicking the dead horse, again, weight reduction
I know there have been many posts on the subject of weight reduction, and I know the standard suggestions. Ever since seeing an itemized breakdown of exactly what makes a datsun 240z lighter than a 260z, I began to wonder what exactly makes my 930 weigh more than a 1972 911. More specifically, I mean a 1972 911 like Jack's BBII. I am interested in everything that weighs more outside of the parts I can guess like AC, motor, tranny, brakes, wheels, fenders (I choose Jack's car because the brakes and wheels are upgraded so those weights shouldn't be different), and bumpers (I've already switched to RSR/IROC front and rear).
Ultimately, way later down the line (years), I want to take it down to the bare metal and start anew without heavy undercoating and the like. Turbo RSR specs would be fun. But now the car is in my garage waiting for an engine and so far all I've done is sit in the empty cavity in the rear and try to get all the little pieces of sound pad off that are still stuck to the car. Is there any insulation under the carpets inside, or anything else I can get to? It would be great to get a list of every difference similar to that for the datsun. Thanks a lot

Yeah, there's insulation under the carpets. It's a kind of "overcoating," in that it's atop rather than under the pan. One way to get it off, which worked just fine for me, is to laboriously scrape it off with a putty knife. It'll come of in big, hard chunks if you get it right. (It's not gummy material; it's hard.) I've heard that another technique is to put dry ice on top of it and chill it, which supposedly makes it come off easier. Somebody once supposedly saved all the pieces, then bagged and weighed 'em and removing that overcoating/soundproofing is apparently worth about 16 pounds. There's also a huge, heavy piece of insulation under the rear seats--a great big ugly fibrous thing that not uncommonly also gets watersoaked and even heavier, if you have any leaks back there.
