Replace just dust boot on Clutch Master Cylinder
The dust boot on my Clutch Master Cylinder (1987 Targa) is torn. I will be installing the brass bushings in the Pedal Cluster so pulling it all out. Didnt want to purchase a new master cylinder if I didn't have too.
Can't find just the dust boot anywhere - do they come separately? My Master Cylinder is original so is it best to just replace it anyway? Thanks in advance for any thoughts. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1568596223.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1568596233.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1568596297.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1568596338.jpg |
The boot is probably not available separately. If you can find a supplier who offers a rebuild kit for the master cylinder, the boot probably will be included.
I don't recommend replacing the master cylinder only at this point, if you replace the master, plan on replacing the slave as well. My experience has been that replacing either one alone causes the other end to fail forthwith. |

Wondering if I could somehow seal the rubber up somehow? Use that seal tape you see on TV or something... |
I would replace the master cylinder at this stage in its life. You have to remove the master from the pedal cluster anyway. So you might as well just replace it. It's not terribly expensive.
You don't have to replace the slave but that's the one that typically fails. You can replace one or the other and the system will behave just fine. In a similar fashion, replacing just the brake master cylinder doesn't require you to replace the brake calipers. Just be careful when you're removing the pedal assembly. The clutch pedal wants to "fall" and with the pressure port open, after you've removed the steel pressure line, you'll squirt hydraulic fluid all over the place when the pedal drops. Trust me on this one. Been there, had that happen. You could just wrap some fabric around the boot. The boot only serves to keep dirt off the plunger. And there's PLENTY of dirt that gets in the pedal assembly. |
Make a nice patch using RTV silicone sealer...
