Newbie question: how to shift G50

I'm a newbie so please go easy on me :) I just bought an '87 Carrera a few weeks ago. For G50 hydraulic clutch, do I need to push clutch pedal all the way to floor or just half way when shifting into gear? Thank you in advance.

All the way to the floor.

This has been your one allowable newbie question. Prepare for flaming next time. :)

Not sure I completely agree. My clutch grabs very close to the top of the pedal travel range. I often shift between gears with a tap of the clutch pedal (about 1/2 way to the floor) with no problem. Always start out in first gear from the floor though.

I'll second Mike's words. It depends on where the clutch grabs in your car. Most of the time, I don't even have to get it halfway down to shift smoothly.

I agree with the first to the floor from the feel of the car, but could someone explain why for me?

Thanks.

What do you mean?

Are you saying it feels better if you push it all of the way to the floor? If that is the case it probably has to do with the rpm drop during the shift.

Yeah, to use the technical terms, the car just feels happier if the pedal goes to the floor from a stop. I'm not really sure why.

Thank you for all feedback so far. More would be great.

Jgordon, I have a theory on this. When shifting it is smoothest if you put the car in gear when the revs have dropped to the appropriate rev for the gear. The extra time that it takes to get the clutch to the floor and back up allows the revs to fall far enough. Without letting the revs fall the syncros have to work and take a split second. I bet that if you pushed the clutch half-way in, but paused briefly you would get the same feel.

As others have said, to the floor for starting out, but about halfway once moving.
