Adding proper hood latch to my backdate...what parts do I need?
My 82 911 is a 73 replica backdate. Currently it just has the front exterior hooks as the hood is fiberglass. However, I am getting a new fiberglass longhood from Getty that has the short liner so it should match up with the internal latching mechanism.
However, I'm just not sure what I need to add that in. I'm going to probably need the cable and pull to attach to the dash inside, but what about the actual latch on the hood? Is it just the hood lock upper (https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/91151105103OEM.htm?pn=911-511-051-03-OEM&bt=Y&fs=0&SVSVSI=798) or do I also need the hood lock panel cover (https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/91155508500OEM.htm?pn=911-555-085-00-OEM&bt=Y&fs=0&SVSVSI=798)? I'm just not sure what exactly I need to fully finish the job. Thanks! |
That is the right hood lock upper for the short hood liner. You will have to make a puller for the safety latch that comes out on the driver’s side or alternatively get a front facing extension lever from TRE ( think they still make them).
I would wait on the cover until you instal the new hood as there may not be enough clearance to shut and align properly with the fenders. You can check this out from underneath if your gas tank is out. Otherwise run a thin bead of putty/kids plastercine along both horizontal edges and close the frunk to determine thickness. i extended my short hood on my backdate and use this set up. i originally had TRE extend the latch for me, but i opted to go this direction instead. uses all the original hardware. works great. i like this system much better... |

Bravo !! If I might suggest ? If that’s 1/4” stainless tube , even if well reamed I’d look at installing plastic tube plugs on the ends with holes for the rope to pass though so the tube doesn’t damage the rope . Although this could look rather ugly , so another idea would be to flare the ends to guarantee no sharp edges .. Also , I would use heat-strink both on the loop , and the frayed ends after the crimp to avouid paintwork damage . If you would like to rework your system I would gladly provide you with the parts needed for free . Just send me a pm and I’ll post it out to you . If you can provide an iso of the tube , I can get one made up at work for the op as well . |
certainly not my idea. my buddy marc zurlinden extended the hood for me, and he makes these. i believe it's aluminum.
