Get it down to sleepers speed shop in Costa Mesa if you can. They'll have it running in a jiffy.

That shop that Ryan mentioned is excellent (no affiliation) - there are also TLG and TRE in the Valley.

Sleepers it might be. Anybody else recommend TLG since they are closer?

Sleepers knows aircooled cars but in OC not LA
If you cant get to The OC Marc Bixen at Red Line Service West LA is one of the best Aircooled guys around. I trust him with my 930 and he built my 2.7 hot rod. I am in OC now and Sleepers is my go to. Pick the one close to you.

There's also Ottos in Venice, and Callas Rennsport in Torrance. Tony Callas is the best, but there's a whole intake procedure that you may not want to do.

What do you mean by “intake procedure”

TLG typically gets abundant referrals so I can attest to that. Locally to me is Rusnak Pasadena Aircooled. I have been very happy with Bill there.

It didn’t pass smog and it idles up and down. TRE thinks it’s the Jetronic (bosche) unit under the seat as they switched the unit with one from an ‘83 and it passed smog. They didn’t know how to fix it and didn’t know where to go.
At this point I’m not sure what is wrong. Now it runs worse... |

Oscillating idle usually means it's running rich.
I assume TRE measured the fuel pressures ? |

Don’t know. They said it’s the jetronic unit and didn’t know how to repair. I’m just going to take it to another shop as recommended above. Thanks all!

He is pretty cool about loaning them for a road test to see if it fixes problems before you buy, but I can't speak for him. 1980 is the first year with the Lambda system. I think they used a tweaked 944 box. From 81 on they had a "911" box made but they are still not the same from 81-83. Little changes. Saying this just so you are aware that you should probably not try to mix and match.
