Would you upgrade an 88 or buy modern?
I sure do miss owning a fast and well handling 911 too.
This is a completely stock 1988 with 165,000 miles and meticulously cared for by my best friend before me. Doesn't leak a drop of oil, records dating way back with no rebuild ever documented. I love the GP white, white Fuchs and tan interior...love it. I've always been of the mindset to do what I want to a 911 regardless of what it does to the value or what other people think...but I'm having a difficult time here. I'm asking myself, and now you all, do I put the money into this, upgrade the suspension and engine? Or do I sell and buy another modern Porsche. Thinking 997 GTS. ![]() Last edited by Undecided; 09-27-2019 at 09:38 AM.. |

This tantamount to asking if you should sell your recurve bow and buy a .308 with a high-power scope.

If you love it, leave it as-is. If you want modern, buy the 997. Don’t try to turn the ‘88 into a 997.

No intention of turning it into a 997. I'm just battling with whether or not to make this 911 fast and handle better possibly at the expense of decreasing it's value or buying modern.

I can say without a doubt the bushings on your 88 need replaced if they’ve never been done. Makes a huge difference in feel, many guys here have never driven a 911 that was not worn out so you see a lot of posts about bad handling at high speeds etc. These should be a one hand on the wheel at 100mph kind of car because that is how they were new with factory rubber bushings.

Agree...there would be huge improvements simply by refreshing the stock suspension.

If you leave the stock look inside and out then go for modding the '88's engine and suspension. If you have the means to do it right you will end up with a far more interesting car.
If you want to make it something it isn't then go for the 997. A lot less effort buying the 997. If I'm daily driving this car then the 997 hands down. If it's a 2nd fun car, '88 all the way.

I wasn't trying to be disparaging, I apologize if it sounded that way. I would go where your passion tells you.

I did exactly this 2 years ago. Sold my 89 after daily driving it for 15 years. I love the air-cooled cars, have owned and raced multiple, but my 997 GTS is equally as sweet with all the modern conveniences and plenty of power and handling to have fun.
Go drive a 997 GTS, make it a PDK in my opinion, and see for yourself if you like it. Gone but not forgotten 89 ![]() The GTS ![]()

I own/owned 3 modern Porsche. 996 (2002 C4S), 997 (2006 Turbo S) and 991 (2013 S).
None of them were/are anything like my 88 911. No comparison. Yeah they are all Porsche but not the same. My baby is a hot rodded 1988 - 911 Coupe. It goes. It is light. It makes me smile. Extremely well sorted cars cost money.

LOL, we just moved here from Charleston, SC. Quality not quantity! Charleston = flat and hot; Maine = beautiful roads and weather, but shorter season. I figure the season will be late April through end of November possibly later. I grew up here and love being back. Where does she go to school?

I love Maine.
For me, no question I would keep the 1988. What do you want to do with the car? Daily? DE? |

Williams 4.0 is the best upgrade. IMHO

@AG81, I've seen your thread
![]() Are the Mezger 3.6 and Williams 4.0 for real? Sounds expensive ![]() |
